Neither of my DSLR's have LiveView but I have a couple of P&Ss that do. I think that having the camera in tight to your eye would be a lot steadier than arms extended in front of you looking thru the LCD.

Arms extended? You need bifocals or reading glasses!

With both presbyopia and myopia, I have to take off my glasses to shoot. I use the myopia to view the screen up close.

OK, so you view the LV screen with it pressed up against your face. Cool.

Guess that would work too.

Howdy All,

Here's Joe McNally's comments about being left-eyed and holding a camera :D.

I'm right handed and before I ever had a camera when I fired a rifle I did it left handed and sighted
with my left eye. I have done the same with a camera view with my left eye. My reason for this is I need
to close one eye and that would be my right eye. For all the tea in China I can not close my left eye with
my right eye open. I do have a sharp shooters badge from my service days so my style does work.

The screen is about 6 inches from my eyes. That's the only way I can do it. My right eye, the one with more myopia, does the work there. The left eye has a longer focal distance.

That was useful for right-eyed people, too, but why did he wear black? Given the stances he demonstrated using a black camera, anything light would have shown them up better.

If you use the LCD screen, both eyes work for you. Does the viewfinder have any advantage over the screen besides draining the battery less? I don't find that the view through a tiny window helps at all. It doesn't show the focus or the effect of settings.

Much faster AF, better stability (think about it, you have 2 hands and your face to keep the camera still), and better comfort IMO.

When those things don't matter, i.e. landscapes on a tripod, I use live view. Handheld, always viewfinder.

I too, am Left-Eyed and Right Handed. In my younger days, it made me a great switch hitter in baseball. I remember as a small child I showed both right and left-handed motor skills. The teacher at the time "trained" me to be right handed.

I joke with my assistants that being left-eyed, the visual signals go directly to the creative part of the brain and not the analytical. (they usually don't laugh...)

Even though I'm left-handed, cameras have always been "left-eyed" to me, I think it's built in to the design! And, of course, we we shoot "right-hand-dominant", right?

Plus the fact that in analog times, and before auto-focusing got implemented, it felt (and still feels) more natural and more precise to focus manually with the left hand for us left-handed folks

Actually no Tony, I look through the viewfinder with my left eye, with my right firmly closed.

Richard, re-read what I said -- I think cameras are designed to be "left-eye dominant" but to be used as "right-hand dominant". So, yes, with at least our DSLRs and "compact" cameras we "tend" to use our left eyes with the viewfinder and then we "grip" and "trigger" and "tweak the controls" with our right hand whether we are left-handed or not.

I'd say computers are also designed for "righties" -- not just your typical mouse layout but also things like the number pad and other "functional" keys (Enter, Backspace, Delete, Insert, Home, End, Page Up/Page Down), all of them requiring "right-hand functionality"...I'm glad that I taught myself "typing", that is, ten-finger "touch" typing, but I'm still not so good with all that "right-handed" stuff!

I found out yesterday why I am left-eye dominant. My optometrist says my right eye has astigmatism which prevents me from focusing with just my right eye.
