Athlete portraits

I'm involved with a group of folks who run obstacle course races (Spartan Race, Tough Mudder and similar) - some for fun, some competitively. After a training session at Harvard Stadium last weekend, we setup for some portraits in the concourse.

These were lit with two speedlites - one with a CTO gel, the other bare. The camera was balanced for Tungsten to make the background light go harsh and cold.

The tire was 450lbs, and was getting tossed around like a toy!

As an "haha funny" for the group, I made the moody "Death Race hoodie" shot into an internet meme ...

For those not familiar - the Death Race is a 36+ hour event held in VT yearly (this past year went into the three day range). The entrants are put through non stop workouts, rucking, hiking, running, challenges - both physical and mental ... of the 300 - 400 who entered this year, less than 100 finished. This guy was a DNF for 2012 - he had to stop after "only" 48 hours, and wants to go back for 2013 and finish.

I'm really surprised these portraits didn't get more comments. I think they're really well done. Maybe people are gone for the holidays and not checking the forum too much. Anyway, great work--particularly the hoodie shot!

Thank you - and yes, I LOVE how the hoodie shot came out! It's become one of my favorite photos of the year.

My attention goes straight to the watermark, there's probably a reason you have it so big.

Yep - the watermark is only there when it's being shared from my hosting account (I have some on flickr with a more sensible watermark, and the athletes got copies themselves without it)

and yes, I flipped that thing a few times - quite a workout!

thanks everyone - I've been enjoying working with these super fit folks - here's another shot from a previous shoot with the hoodie guy - part of the Death Race typically involves hours and hours of chopping logs - he wanted to train for it ... it was 24f outside when we took this!
