Okay I have a little bit a dilemma I just recently got the 17-40mm lens I am thinking of selling my 28-135 lens.

Here is what I have for lenses curently

17-40mm f4

50mm f1.8

70-200 f.28

28-135mm

do you really think I am going to miss any of the gaps in focal length if I get rid of this lens. I really dont use it that much and now that I have the 17-40 Im sure it will get even less use now.

I'd sell it. Perhaps sell 50/1.8 as well and buy 50/1.4 with the money

I don't know how anyone on here can possibly have more information than you do to help with your decision. Go back and look at the exif data on your past images to see how often you shoot in the range you'd lose. That will give you the answer.

Personally I'd still be wanting a 'normal' walkaround zoom (but not the 28-135 :-)), but if you say you don't use it much, then sell it...

I just bought a 28-135 so I would have a decent, lighter, inexpensive walkaround lens for my 5D. What mid-range zoom are you going to use? None is the only answer that makes sense. Buy a 24-105? It costs 4 times what you'll get for the 28-135. And the IQ is not that much better. Perhaps a 24-70 (II?). VFE, but at least it is f/2.8. I'd keep a 28-135 I was hardly using. You won't get much for it anyway.

Sell it, and if you find yourself missing the focal range, pick up a 24-105L off the B & S boards, they seem to be going for around $700 all day long on there. A great value.

I don't really use all of my lenses all at the same time, so the idea of 'gaps' or coverage completeness are not always evident just from looking at all the lenses I have.

For example, I have a 16-35, a 50mm prime, a 24-105 and also a 70-200. You might look at those four lenses and think that I don't need to keep the 24-105. After all, the other three pretty much cover that range with only some small gaps.

But that actually has nothing to do with how I use the 24-105L and why I have the lens. The key thing about my 24-105L is that when I have the lens with me, it is usually the only lens I have with me. It is my walkabout that I use on my 5D3.

I doubt I ever leave the house with my 16-35 and my 24-105 both in the bag.

So my advice is not to think about gaps and coverage, but instead to look at how you use each lens individually. If you don't need a lens for any specific purpose, sell it.

If you have to ask this question, the answer is yes.

The gap isn't much of a gap there.

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

I like to keep a cheap normal zoom around for vacations and general shooting. I'd keep it.
