There is no one setting that will do what you want and perhaps you should have considered an upper end P&S. I see you live in Michigan; what you do today for outdoor work will likely be significantly different in July. However, the default setting should deliver something acceptable in most instances. If you feel the defaults don;t work, tell us why and we can better advise what to change. The best thing you can do is add some of your pictures here with the EXIF attached and then we can see exactly what you have done and offer better suggestions.

But you really should explore and learn and take advantage of the capabilities of the DSLR.

The majority of people are going to say shoot RAW and post process for the best results.

My default is to use Standard or Landscape picture styles, depending on the shot. I crank up saturation and sharpness by one tick in each style, and leave it there. If I need ANYTHING else, I shoot raw. If you are going to shoot raw, LR4 should be your best friend.

Please please please reconsider. I assume you have reasons, but you are cutting off a very simple way of making a dramatic improvement to your images. By using one of the presets and doing in-camera conversions you are limiting the results. Its like picking one set of shoes to wear for a month and not knowing if you have to go to a dance or shovel out the pig barn.
