So I have a question or two. I am starting to do a lot of printing and and continuing to learn more and more about the vast world of printing, profiles, CM, etc.

My first question is printing on a Mac. I have downloaded and installed the paper profiles for the different papers I use (Illford Gallery Smooth Pearl and a Canson Infinity Sample Pack). To the best of my knowledge my software (Aperture 3) is using the same color profile as my camera.

My prints are fairly close, but still a little off. I use an Apple Cinema Display and a Spyder 2. I read in one of the sticky's the Spyder 2 may not work with an LED display like the ACD.

Anyway, one of the things I have noticed makes a difference is in the Mac print dialog box under Quality and Media that comes up after choosing print in the software (Aperture or PS) print dialog box. There is an option for Media Type. I am not sure what to select here. There seems to be quite a number of options (22 of them) How do I know which one to pick?? Some of them are very generic.

Thanks for any help.

Also, if there is a thread I missed somewhere that goes through making sure everything is set up step by step from Camera to Software to Print output, that would be great.

Cheers

Aperture is probably using whatever output profile you tell it to for raw files. No idea what it's using "under the hood".
Media type: The paper supplier should be able to tell you.

For printing using printer/paper profiles: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1132002

1 Can't comment for sure about Spyder on ACD. I know the X-rite gear worked v. well on the iMac I had
2 You don't tell us what your printer is, so this is a long shot, but the correct media type for Ilford GSP on Canon dye-based printers is Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy (SP1) from memory. You choose Epson Premium Semigloss Photo Paper to print on the epson 3880, for example. Can't help with the Canson.
3 If you look on Keith Cooper's site (external link)he gives you some little targets to print on the various media, and advice on how to examine the print, to help you work out the best media setting to use for any media on your printer. (Although, as René says, the good manufacturers should tell you)

Excellent, thanks for the link. I knew I was going to forget to put my printer in there. I have the Canon Pro9000 (First version)

Really? Photo Paper Plus Glossy? Even though I never use glossy paper? I always use semi-gloss or matte?

Ok, whoa!

I see Ilford has changed its recommendation (external link).
They suggest Photo Paper Plus Semigloss, now, for the IGSPP11. It used to be SP1 for the IGSPP9. (I ran a Pro9000 until I upgraded to an Epson 3880 recently)

Sorry!

Tim
