I'm looking for something wide for my 5D mk2. Not really worried about image quality or manual focus.

I had a play with a Sigma 17-35 last night and enjoyed it, what else could i use?

I would get a 16-35II but looking for something wide to play with for the next few months. What else fits. Im not interested in a 17-40 either.

You enjoyed a Sigma 17-35 but are not interested in a Canon 17-40. I guess if you could give voice to what you see as the big difference between these two lenses it would help us understand what criteria you are using to evaluate the lens you want.

Otherwise your interest in an ultra wide lens for a 5D camera will generally be met with suggestions of lenses like the 17-40.

On the cheap, check out the Rok/Samyang 14mm. Some serious distortion, but apparently pretty easily handled in post. Very sharp lens though.

Do some research on the Samyang 14mm f/2.8. It's a fun lens.

The Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 is another interesting option.

Dont get me wrong I love the 17-40, i prefer the 15-35, I will be getting a 16-35 at some point next year and I knew people would point to the 17-40. I just want something to play with until then.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep them coming.

12-24mm Sigma.

Canons to the left, Canons to the right,
We hold our L glass toward the light,
Digitizing in a snap reflective glory
That will forever tell our imaged story.

I presume that you are looking for something reasonably priced. It depends of course how wide you want but there are a few good choices at decent prices.
1. Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM. This one is supported in Canon DPP for optical corrections that really lifts its image quality if you shoot raw and it is decent anyway. Used prices on these are sometimes quite reasonable.

2. Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX DG. Sigma used to make these and they are actually quite good although you can't use front filters. The lens is a bit large but low in weight and goes wider than any Canon zoom. These can be found used in the $3-400 range used.

3. Sigma 12-24 f/4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM. This is the original 12-24mm that has lower distortion but more vignetting. It has some curvature of the focus plane so stopping down is a good idea. You can find one of these used in the $5-600 range. DxO Optics Pro supports this lens for automatic corrections if you want to eliminate the chromatic aberration and the bit of distortion otherwise do it in Photoshop or Adobe Camera Raw manually.

Why would you consider the Sigma but not the 17-40L?

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

Really? As stated twice now, I will be getting a 16-35II canon middle of next year and want a toy to play with in the time being.

couldn't the 17-40L be used as a toy as well...unless it's a budget thing, but the sigma 12-24mm costs more than the 17-40L

the sigma 15-30mm pops up on my ebay 30mm searches all the time buy it now under $330...
