Can I wirelessly fire my 430EX with JUST my 7D?
I briefly tried last night but could not figure it out. And No I haven't read the manuals.
When I bought the 430EX I had bought the T3i and was told the two of them worked together easily.
I'm selling the T3i and never got to the point that I was ready to try remote flash trigger with it.
So this is all new to me and I know you guys have all the tricks

The on-board flash is used to trigger the external flash.

The 7D's pop up flash is used to trigger the 430.

Click the tutorial link in my signature. I've got a complete tutorial on how to do it, everything you could ever want to know in an easy-to-follow tutorial.

The pop up has to fire to signal the slave to fire, but you can select the pop up flash to not fire when the shutter is actually open and thus not contribute to exposure. It's under "wireless func." in the menu. Select the speedlite only icon.

Open your manual to page 119 and start reading or better yet, start at page 1. Seriously there is so much about the 7D that you can do and never know if you don't read the manual.

For Canon "Wireless" light-pulse comms, you would need a master flash like the 550RX, 580EX, 580EX II etc, mounted on the camera.

Or you could use a Canon-compliant ETTL cable.

Or, radio triggers.

I tried retiring, but gave it up - it's a dead end

I'll definitely look at the tutorials. I think I'm skipping right to the histogram tutorial.

I played around a bit last night and realized the flash from the 7D doesnt end up in the exposure, unless you allow the on camera to fire also.

Hey this is so cool!
ANd your right the manual needs to be read. This is nothing but a computer that you can attach a lens too. Even the 430 is a computer with a lamp that goes off on command

I have upgraded from a T3i to the 7D as I learn more and get more into the Photography. The T3i was an entry level DSLR and a learning tool.
Now I'm online looking for stands and umbrellas and more.
Damn this forum is helpful and expensive!

Is this line of sight or can you have the flash hidden behind something?

Generally its line of sight, but it can trigger when bounced off walls and such.

I'm currently looking for a flash unit and have just about decided on the Nissin Di866 Mk II which is about the same price as the Canon 430Ex MkII, but half the price of the Canon 580Ex MkII to which it more directly compares, specification-wise (though some reviews suggest it outperforms the Canon unit). Wireless ETTL is also reported as working better than the 580.

My mind is pretty much made up and I will get the Nissin unit as soon as funds are available.

Oh, you can either buy two, or save a fair chunk of cash too, particularly against the cost of the 600EX - I know where my money is going :)

Age is a state of mind, and I don't.

Yea, I just out grew the t3i before I even got around to wanting to try off camera flash

Line of site looks like it should be best, but I'm playing around with just this and it appears if the 430 can get some of the pre flash bounced off of walls or windows it will still fire. I have not tried distance, but I'm sure at some point even line of site will be too far

If I were starting from scratch now I would think long and hard about going that route too. Thing is though that I have about $900 in three off camera flashes. If I were to go RF with the 600s and a ST E3 I would be in for over twice that. Meanwhile the new Yongnuo 622s could upgrade me to RF for less than $200.

The 600 uses radio frequency where the old system is optical and needs to see the series of preflashes fired in a type of Morris Code fashion. RF can work inside softboxes and at a much further distance. It's not effected by bright outside ambient light like optical.
