I am planning on selling the Tamron 18-200 as it is c**p and a no hoper....

...and my Tamron 70-300 is almost dead and I am wondering do I get the Canon 70-300 IS or spend the extra £100 and buy the 70-200 f4 L? This will of course mean I need a TC for the extra 100mm or so, will lose alot of light doing so too....

I haven't seen much written about the 70-300 IS, except the DO model, so have to ask if anyone has experience with it?

I don't think u can go wrong with either BUT I bought the 70-300 and here is why:

It has IS

It has an extra 100mm of reach

The 70-200 is not really a fast lens and wide open not significantly faster then the 70-300.

good luck with your decision.

With the 1.4x TC, you'll be at 280 and f/5.6 vs. 300 and f/5.6 with the 70-300 IS. You're not losing any lens speed. You're gaining hand-holdability with the IS, but the viewfinder will not look noticeably brighter with one or the other.

Or consider the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. It's rather highly regarded in terms of image quality. I have the 70-200 f/4L and love the IQ, but the low light performance just isn't there.

If you can afford the 70-200mm f4 and TCon combo then look seriously at the Sigma 100-300mm f4. One of Sigma's top lenses and amongst the very highest scoring lenses at www.fredmiranda.com (external link) ... not really a walkaround lens tho and really likes a mono or tri to give the last 10% that drives IQ into the stellar category. Also takes a 1.4 TCon very well so up to 420mm at 5.6 and Af remains fast.

Get the F4!
I have the 70-200F4 and its my absolute favorite lense! Colors, contrast and AFspeed is amazing - you will find your self with a stupid grin on your face everytime you browse pix taken with this lense. The TC works fine on this lense, but with slower AF and a tendency to hunt - that said some of my best shots was taken with that combo.

I don't do to much indoors shooting, so I prefer portability over speed. I do have a couple of sigma EX lenses and they are just fine, but they just dont have that quality feel of the Canon.

Good luck choosing, it's half the fun :D

The "quality feel" of the 70200EX is just as good or better than the 70200f4L. Have you ever used it? It's a gem (as are the 100300f4, 120300f2.8).

Sorry jojo, didnt meen to step on any "sigma" feet - read it as my opinion.
I didnt try the sigma, just held it in my hands and to me the canon is just better - not much but better. Remember this is opinions and not facts, I belive that was what was asked for?
