Replacement for my 7D

I currently have a 1Dx and a 7D that I am using to shoot non league football (soccer). A 400 f2.8 goes on the 1Dx and a 70-200 f2.8 goes on the 7D.

I am finding that as soon as the floodlights come on to counter the failing light, the 7D is rendered totally useless because the quality of the floodlighting is that bad and ISO 6400 just ain't good enough to get a decent shutter speed, even at f2.8.

In this situation, I am stuck with the 1Dx on the 70-200 f2.8 which isn't that flexible but at least gets me some goal line/goal mouth/celebration action.

My deliberations are around what to get for a second body to replace the 7D. Do I go for another 1Dx or for a 5DIII or something else?

Things I have considered so far
the 1Dx is more expensive than the 5DIII
the 5DIII aint too shabby at capturing sports so Ive read
you cant go wrong with a 1Dx and I'll have 2 bodies with same settings and same control layout so less confusion
I can use the 5DIII for landscape and macro work when not shooting sports, but havent seen if the 1Dx will be as good for this

I am fortunate enough to be able to buy either body

Any thoughts or considerations would be much appreciated

5D3 for sure. I use it for sports all the time. You will be missing out on a couple frames every second, but the AF is the same system as the 1DX.

For about the same price, you could get a 1D4.

That's the path I chose and I've never looked back. 7D is a great camera but just can't compete with the low light and AF capabilities of the 5D mk3 or 1Dx which happen to match pretty well. I sometimes have to look at the exif to remember which camera some shots came from. I do miss the crop factor a little but with 22mp there's plenty of info there to do the crop in post and not lose too much IQ.
And as for your concern about non sports uses of the 1Dx...I don't think there's any style of photography it can't do. I almost went with 2 1Dx's but the 5D can go a little more stealth if I remove the grip and its shutter is significantly quieter. Also a lot lighter if i load it into a shoulder rig with all the bells and whistles for video work. It also has headphone out which is very useful when I shoot video which is the bulk of my biz.
Lately I've been going out with either 24-70 on 5D and 70-200 on the 1Dx or 70-200 on the 5D and 500 f4 on the 1Dx and I've not had a moment where I wished I had anything different.

I'd go with another 1Dx, just for the same controls/menu.

I'd go for another 1Dx if money was no object. Although the 5D mkIII is a great camera, the higher frame rate, weather sealing, shorter shutter lag, camera layout familiarity, battery & card type would swing me towards the 1Dx.

If money is no object, AND, you have no need for a smaller (ungripped) body for walk around non sports shooting, then get another 1DX. If you care about money, and would like a smaller body for walk around, get the 5D3. The autofocus and menu systems are the same on them, so shooting them together should be easy. The gripped 5D3 is the closest to a 1D series feel of any gripped body I've ever used. I think the fps difference is irrelevant. The only other consideration may be weather related.

I know this is taken out of context, but we probably won't see these five works preceding 1Dx too often.

Congrats! I'm finding many of the answers to my questions in photography start with "1D..."
