I dropped my Sigma 17-50 2.8 like a dick..

Now the zoom ring is really stiff and takes quite a bit of elbow greese to zoom, still takes amazing pictures though

Not sure what I should do. Get it fixed, sell for a fraction of the price or buy a 40d and use it as a backup camera/lens?

Any ideas how much this would cost to fix?

Whoops.

I'd get it checked out first to see if anything internal is damaged.
Depending on your morals I wouldn't just sell it.

if the focus ring and image are fine and it's only the zoom ring, I'd still use it. I'd have it checked out too

I checked out a used version of this lately and I could not believe how stiff the zoom ring was .... it was uncomfortably stiff. I asked him if it has always been like that and he said yes. Of course I did not buy it from him. Now that you mention what happened to you I am leaning to think he did the same thing .......

Just don't do what he did and try to get full pop on what used lenses are going for. Get it looked at!

When I say "sell for a fraction of the price" I forgot to mention that I would obviously tell the potential buyer what happened to it and only charge $150-175 for it :)

I'd just get it fixed. It'll probably cost less than the loss you'd take on selling it in that condition.

you're going to lose money somehow...might as well get it fixed, or at least see how much it would be...i don't see the point in getting a backup body when all you would have is 2 lenses....

In the time I've been on POTN, I've seen a lot of reasons for buying another body, but this is the first time I can remember dropping a lens as a "reason." :);)

well this took an interesting turn...either way now i think you should send it in to access the damage...

when they tell you how much it'll be see if it's worth it

figure you can get $200 for a busted lens...figure how much used lenses are selling for...if the cost to repair is more than the difference between the two sell it...although you'll probably get less if you disclose how much the repair would be...

I don't know about that...

I would not buy it for $200 unless I had an estimate already completed on that lens...Otherwise- I would not think it was worth - at most- $100 - if.. Even then- a used lens in good shape- is around 450 to 550- max... $200 initial cost does not leave a lot of room for shipping and any other damages that are found during the repair.. It'd be too much of a hassle and risk- without an estimate- not a lot of leeway.. Only if you had an repair estimate of $75 to $100 for the lens (which would be cheap- and unlikely) would I consider the lens - as is- to be worth $200--- yeah... Let's say your estimate or repair was ~$150 (SWAG).. Together- $350... Add in about $25 for shipping, etc ($375) , and that you could probably find a functioning unit for $450 to 500... I'd want a bit more of a discount for my hassles and risks...

^^you'd be amazed how much people on eBay pay for damaged lenses. As far as I can tell he claims this one still works ok as well, just tighter on the zoom

If it is a lens you will use then get it fixed. To replace it would be much more!
