Hello all,
It's been many years (since the film days) that I have been hobbying in photography. I just picked up a Canon 5D classic. What would be your choice of "walk-around" lens. I like shooting outdoors in natural light, structures, etc.

Thank you,
Tim

I liked the 17-40 on mine. Versatile, light and reasonable focal length for most things. My 2nd choice would the 50 1.8, great value for the money.

Lots of great choices for full frame. Pancake is worth a look for casual shooting.

Most versatile is the 24-105, better again is the 24-70, but the one I like best is the 35L. It does not have the verstility of the others though. I find the 17-40 good if I want to get a lot in, but usually 24 is wide enough on the FF. I also like to get my 70-200 out as well for candid and feature stuff. If I had to say one, even though it is far from my favourite, it would be the 24-105 I think because of its versatility.

wow....quick responses around here. That's nice. Thank you all for the advice. I'll look at all of these and choose one to start with. As time goes on, I'm sure there will be more to buy.

This lens just came with my 6D, seems very nice!

The 24-105 is my "go-to lens" for my 5D Classic.

The 24-70 has a higher performance in some things, so that's a consideration. But also, I've had spots were I wanted/needed a wider field of view, and so I tend to keep a 16-35 in my bag. But like I said, the 24-105 is an excellent choice for a "starter lens" for a 5DC.

Personally I like 50mm primes on my 5Dc.

Structures?
Canon TS-E 24mm 1:3.5 L II is the answer to get it done properly.
Walk around?
Anything between 17 and 50 mm. Or 24-105. 24-70 is called the Brick, if you like to walk around with it on your neck...
I prefer 28-75 2.8 if I need to be flexible and not overweight. It works great for family pics, BTW.

My "walk around" lens that's on my 5Dclassic 80% of the time is the 100-400, but I don't think that would work for you if you like to photograph structures.
At times I put the 24-105 on, and it's fairly good for what I shoot, although I find that 105mm on the long end is really limiting. If only it was a 35-150 instead of 24-105, it would be perfect!
I think the 24-105 would probably be ok for you, but you would probably want to go even wider at times with those structures.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Another vote for the 24-70. Yes, a little shorter FF than the 105, but the optics and speed are phenomenal. I have challenged people to examine shots and tell me which was the 24-70 and which was a prime 50. Many have failed.

40 2.0 and 85 1.8 would be two nice choices and if you got both you would have a nice range. its a nice little starter kit. With my 5D classic I bought a 50 1.2, and they just love each other :D
