I updated the firmware on my 7d a few days ago, went to a photography workshop on Saturday for 7 hours and the camera was fine. no errors at all. But I went to download the photos from my camera using EOS Utility as I always do, and the screen where you download the photos, where there is usually a preview of the image, its just grey. EOS Utility comes up with an error when I try to download them.

So I tried going through "my computer" and locating the files that way. Get to the DCIM folder and the files appear as local disks, 0kb, with no information about the file. At one point trying to download the images I get "Err" on the top LCD screen. Take the battery out, put it in again and all is well.

I've tried reinstalling EOS Utility, I've reinstalled the firmware on my 7d, restarted my computer, tried different memory cards, different batteries, different USB ports on my computer, and nothing works. what is going on? how do I fix it?

What happens if you just put the memory card into a reader attached to the computer, eliminating EOS utility and the camera entirely from the equation? This is the only way I pull files from the camera, I do not go through USB cables and software to do this.

Does your computer recognize any card? or just not one in particular? Have you tried formatting the cards on the computer and then writing files to them to test them? I would do that, then format the cards in the camera, take a few shots, and see what happens there. I think it is either a card or computer issue.

the card reader wont recognise any of my cards. I formatted the cards on my camera, 3 times each. took about 5 photos on each card, plugged my camera into my computer via usb and i can see the photos if i go through "my computer" and find it on my camera (everything works fine, edited one in lightroom and all is good), but eos utility still displays the photos as grey and wont download them.

Not sure why your card reader won't recognize them, that has something to do with your reader and camera.

Sounds like your EOS utility is the issue then if you can browse the camera with card inserted as an external drive on your computer, but EOS utility won't work with it.

i still dont know why the files where coming up as local disks before i formatted the cards though.

It sounds to me like you are not using a "card reader". A card reader is a piece of hardware that is connected to the computer, usually via a USB connection which may be internal to the computer, that you plug a memory card into. It has absolutely nothing to do with a camera.
