I'm looking to buy a PhotoClam ballhead and haven't managed to get in touch with Kenny at really big cameras. The supplier I contacted has just what I want - a red PC-36N - but only with the clamp loctited onto the head.

So my question is will I be able to remove the clamp, or is it going to be a serious PITA? I assume that most heads come with loctite applied and people get the clamp off, or not?

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with loctite.

Applying heat to loctite will loosen it up.
I've used a soldering iron to transfer heat to the nut/bolt.
This was on blue loctite also.
I have no experience with red loctite.

As Don said, heat applied to the area will loosen red loctite. Actually, blue doesn't require heat at all, as it's meant for easy removal of fasteners. Red on the other hand requires heat before trying tools for removal.

^ +1. Blue Loctite can have the seal broken with a sudden jerk, no heat required. Wrap both points of contact in rags, one in a vise. Use an adjustable wrench with a long handle on the other. Thread lockers do a good job but they are brittle and susceptible to sudden force, so jerk the wrench handle to break the seal. Red Loctite generally requires heat applied directly to the stud. RRS has a PDF section that shows how to do it. Download the PDF installation manual from this RRS web page (external link), go to page 2 and follow the instructions.

Just use heat, soldering iron or pencil torch has worked for me in the past. Obviously the torch requires some care in its use but it doesn't take time at all to work it loose.
