You're son is adorable! If you don't mind me saying so. Thanks, I think I'll go for the f/1.4 since it has a better build. I have read some reviews that people had their f/1.8 break in their camera or split in half. I think this would be great for a up coming camp out/bbq event I will be attending. Do you think this would be good for nighttime? I would like to take some pictures of the bonfire too. Thank you so much for replying/answering :)!

edit: I was thinking your son looked like a little mixed (he reminds of some the kids I babysit which is why that thought crossed my mind) and when I checked out your flickr it was confirmed. So adorable!

Thanks! Yes, he is half European Canadian, half Chinese-Indonesian. I think he's cute, but I'm his Dad, so what do I know?

You know, my 50mm f/1.8 II died exactly that way: I bumped it (just a light bump) and it snapped in half. I bought the 50mm f/1.4 to replace it. I bought 2, actually. The first one wouldn't focus on my 5D. The second one is very sharp, and very accurate. I'm really happy with it!

To answer your question, yes, I do think it's a great lens for night photography. f/1.4 comes in handy then. Mine is acceptably sharp wide open in the centre and it gets nice and sharp by f/2. My suggestion is that you buy it from a retailer who has a good return policy. I bought mine from the Camera Store here in Calgary. They're a good company to deal with, if you're Canadian. B & H and Adorama in the USA are very good too.

He's going to grow up to be a little heart breaker (if you don't mind me saying so)!

I'm going to avoid the f/1.8 for sure now. I'd rather invest in the f/1.4 since it'll last longer and has a better build.

Thank you so much for all of your help and for answering my questions. You have been so helpful. I'm from Ontario (Yeah, Canadians!). I haven't heard of the Camera Store here but I'm new too photography, so I could be wrong. We have blacks, henrys and the typical bestbuy and futureshop. I'll have to check them out again when I'm at the mall next time. Thank you for all of your help and taking time out of your day to answer my questions :D!

Ha ha! He might be. If he is 'a heart breaker' then I hope it doesn't go to his head. He's a sweet little boy at the moment.

The 50mm f/1.8 is really quite good for the price. It is worth buying if you're short of funds. If you do have the funds, the f/1.4 is a bargain too. I know I'll never go back to the cheaper lens now.

You're welcome for the help. If you really wanted to see a lot of answers (possibly some better than mine), opposing views and even arguments(!), you could start a thread in the main lens 'EF and EF-S Lenses' forum. You could also search for the EF 50mm f/1.4 for old threads. This site is full of information. I'm trying not to be condescending, but I see you are very new here. In any case, welcome to the POTN forums! I hope you decide you like photography as much as I do.

Aw, he'll grow up well I'm sure. Don't worry!

I don't mind spending a bit extra for a good lense! I've read some arguments around the net before but I wasn't really sure which one I wanted. However looking through the 50 mm f/1.4 thread it seems to be a better option. Haha, I'm very new to this forum but I do have some experience in photography (high school classes and my friends are taking photography in college and I occasionally help them out here and there but their hard to get a hold of due to the amount of workload they get). Anyways we better keep the conversation short before the mods and everyone get mad.

Thank you for the warm welcome and help once again! I can't wait to get the lense and use it when I visit the ripley's aquarium sometime next week :).

edit: I forgot to ask you about the focusing issue. I'm still learning/working on getting sharp clear in focus pictures, I recently stopped using auto focus in manual mode and have gone completely manual with focusing. Is it very obvious the first lense you had was out of focus/had issues?

Ariaeve.. What other gear do you have?
Other people will certainty agree about the glass sickness that undoubtedly has effected most everyone on this forum. If your just starting out, I recommend the 1.8 II .. and get prepared to spend elsewhere.. Yes the body is cheap, and its not the diameter of a soup can, but having owned both I can tell you I have contemplated selling my 1.4 to fund other glass and picking up another 1.8..
After all, is the 1.4 really worth 3x the price.. not to me.. I can only say that after owning both.
