It takes a few days for the hedgehog to get used to the handling, and believe me you'll want to be extra carefull for your own sake because those quills can be razor sharp when he doesn't want to be handled or is spooked.

Knuckles we've found out is more of a ladies type of hedgehog since it seems he loves to be handled by any of the girls in the house. The boys however can coax him into being friendly after a while but not nearly as quickly as the girls. I really think this ones name should've been Romeo instead.

As far as pets go as long as you have an inclosure of about 4' x 2' and room for their wheel food and water they pretty much keep to themselves until taken out to be played with. If you have other pets such as dogs or cats you needn't worry about them harming the hedgehog when he's out, they'll give him/her a wide berth shortly after getting a dose of the quills. Did I mention they are razor sharp. Our dogs and cats won't get within 4' of Knuckles whenever he's out playing.

One thing I should mention is they are mostly nocturnal creatures so when you do wake them up to play they are usually a bit grumpy so it's best to keep them on the same schedule when letting them out with the family. When they're done socializing they do like to snuggle in close and take naps with you. Hard to believe but when their quills aren't on high alert they're actually quite soft. Just don't fall completely asleep and roll over on the hedghog. They won't be hurt but you'll have a gew hundred acupuncture marks to show for it.;)

All in all they are quite the unusual animal in that they don't mind (to much) taking baths and being gently handled.

Last thing that is really important in keeping your sanity with owning one is since they like to keep late night hours they have their own schedule with their wheel, food and water. It goes like this: Run, run, run on wheel, crunch, crunch, crunch the catfood, slurp, slurp, slurp the water and repeat all night long. Invest in a non squeaking wheel and let them have their own room.

A few notes about "Buddy". First my oldest boy is in animal control at the moment until his police officer training/testing is finished. What that really means since he is an animal lover is that he is akin to taking in strays and outcasts that others either turn in to the shelter or is picked up by himself or others. Aaron takes in up to 7 at a time to by them additional time for adoption by the public or by one of his many friends. Buddy, the dog in the photos is one of these that Aaron has decided to keep and lets him go on calls when possible.

As for the others like the cat in the photo a few postings up that came to live with Aaron through its owner passing away, they all seem to get along nicely with one another and realize that there are people that can love them as much as they love their owners.

Not great photos by any means, but they show a determined dog not to be left out of the photos.

Thor::: Buddy is cool/cute! Kudos to your son for helping those animals in need. We have a 13 y/o ''rescue'' dog that we took in when he was about a year old. He's been a great pet and still going strong.

Thanks guys, I used a flash on camera that was angled to bounce off either the ceiling or wall as needed. Since my 1ds miii is an older body my old quantaray qdc 900wa flash works in ettl mode so I prefer that over my 430exii.

I hate to say it, but I love shooting with my 50 so much I may bypass the 85L and get the 50L instead. But I'll still keep this 50 regardless as it has been such a stellar performer.

A few of my daughters from Christmas.
