Interesting comment (with all the intense criticism of Canon v Nikon on the 5DIII & 1Dx),

if you remove the lowend of the DSLR market (Rebels, D3xxx/D5xxx), Canon’s marketshare increases

The sales stats are for Japan only :)

There's as much criticism of the D800 as there is of the 5D MKIII. Both are great cameras though.

Canonrumors didn't bother posting the whole list. Interestingly the 5D2 sold better than the 5D3 in Japan during 2012.

That's crazy how much the T3i sold. Nearly a quarter of all DSLR sales in Japan! T4i isn't really doing that well in comparison, it couldn't even pass the T2i.

All the KISS (Rebel) models on that list add up to roughly 33% of all DSLR sales. If you throw in 60D and 7D and subtract the t3, Canon has almost 42% of market on that ancient 18MP sensor we all love to hate on. :)

Don't forget the T4i was introduced mid 2012 when the others have been available for purchase for the entire year.

Stats were from end of May through end of December. So that only misses one month of sales for T4i and captures all 5Dmk3 availability.

Canon have always been the gorilla in the marketplace, that they sold more than nikon is no surprise.

Whats the change over time in market share though?

Canon had it easy until nikon made some FF sensor snow canon is behind on the sensor tech, but that isnt the end of the story.

Do you have the stats for Canon vs Nikon world-wide? I've looked and can't find them anywhere.

I may be wrong but I've always heard that Nikon was more popular than Canon in Japan compared to the rest of the world.
Maybe this is relative since the data shows Canon still on top (by a slim margin) but where I am (Europe and USA) Canon still leads by a wide margin.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

By a slim margin? According to this Nikon has 33.6% of the market to Canons 52.2%, I wouldn't call that a slim margin. ;) Granted, I'd still like to see global stats, but I don't think we'll see them any time soon.

According to the link at the OP, this is what I read:

"Interchangeable Lens Camera Marketshare for 2012 (Japan)

Canon 28.6%
Nikon 25%
Olympus 14.3%
Sony 13.3%
Panasonic 11.3% "

That's a pretty slim margin, no?

Ah, I used the SLR sales figures (Nikon Rumors) the OPs link accounts for mirrorless as well as DSLR cameras.

Do you have the stats for USA and Europe that you can point us to?

Who's worried? He posted a fact that I'm interested in seeing the data for.
