It seems to me that most smokers have some twisted sense of entitlement. Just because they are addicted to something, they can do what pleases them, and everyone else should cater to them.

And don't forget Mel they wonder outside for 10 minutes at least every hour, sometimes every half hour (quite a few of them do) - while us non smokers keep pounding away at our job. I brought it up with the other department managers one day, we do not pay these guys to stand around smoking, we pay them to work. The biggest problem? Our state manager is a heavy smoker  He has even put little smoking shelters in the yard for them, with chairs, so they can sit comfortably out of the sun and puff away!!

Oh I will never forget that part! If I was in charge that would never happen. Learn a little self control, chew some gum or whatever, and just work through till the next scheduled break.

At this job it's not bothering me much right now. The company is very strict about garbage. There are a couple of plastic chairs outside in the main smoking area. I get a kick out of the fact that it is also right next to the garbage dumpster. Really nasty in hot weather. My manager is a smoker but he's pretty average about the time he's away. Other things will take him away from the desk for a long time, some meetings will be well over an hour. In this type of job we are moving all over the place all the time, when he's smoking he's just outside the door so if something comes up I really don't have to go searching for him.
One kid we had for a couple of months got himself into trouble a few times. First off he'd be in a non-smoking area, puffing away, and then would just toss the butt on the ground. Then he got into the habit of being out there way too much. He'd bring a car in, pull the drain plug, and go have a smoke. Oil change should only take 30 mins but he'd take a 15 min break in the middle of it. That turned out to be one of the many nails in the coffin when it came to the end of his three months probation.

I tried to use this at rating and ranking time where one person was better than the other but took so many breaks to smoke that their overall performance was worse. I was totally shot down by HR as they told be that to lower the rank of someone based on smoking was discriminatory. I was dumbfounded.

"Nail in the coffin" is very apt Mel, because let's face it, that is what they are. TV adds over here harp on the fact every cigarette is doing you damage. I am lucky, only one of my guys smokes and he is good about it, if we are busy he does not stop till a break. I see others though from other sections wondering out all the time.

No, even over here we cannot discriminate against smokers. I would prefer to make the whole place a non smoking yard. If you want a smoke go out and stand on the footpath. Then make is that you can't go on the footpath unless you are on a break. Many businesses have adopted that rule, including all government departments. While ever our state manager smokes though it will not happen. If the smokers don't want to abide by the rules and don't like it there are other jobs out there for them. I may seem hard but why should they work close to an hour and a half less per day than the non smokers and get paid the same rate.

Dan, that looks like a very relaxing spot!
