Heather? Please don't tell me it's the cat.

Sometimes I think so... (And it's cats, plural.)

Just recently, a co-op in Manhattan voted to make the entire building, including the individual apartments, smoke free!

Dan, that looks like a very relaxing spot!

Nice place to hang out. I usually camp there if I take my RV to NY. Good population of smallmouth bass if you feel like drowning a worm or two.

I tried to use this at rating and ranking time where one person was better than the other but took so many breaks to smoke that their overall performance was worse. I was totally shot down by HR as they told be that to lower the rank of someone based on smoking was discriminatory. I was dumbfounded.

There's gotta be some way you can word it. Something about not being able to stick to the job at hand.

I find that they 'wander off' at the most inopportune times and no one knows where they are.

L.J.G. wrote in post #15452789 (external link)
No, even over here we cannot discriminate against smokers. I would prefer to make the whole place a non smoking yard. If you want a smoke go out and stand on the footpath. Then make is that you can't go on the footpath unless you are on a break. Many businesses have adopted that rule, including all government departments. While ever our state manager smokes though it will not happen. If the smokers don't want to abide by the rules and don't like it there are other jobs out there for them. I may seem hard but why should they work close to an hour and a half less per day than the non smokers and get paid the same rate.

Dan, that looks like a very relaxing spot!

One dealership I worked for insisted that one department had to punch off and back on for their breaks. They had a penchant for taking multiple and long breaks. They would get their pay docked for going over the time limit.

A local pawnshop owner, who used to be one of my customers, told me that he refuses to hire smokers. His arguments are that hiring smokers means lost time and production, higher chance of illness, bad image and smell, and if he was going to have to pay into health care premiums he didn't want to be wasting that money on people who chose to degrade their own health.

And don't forget Mel they wonder outside for 10 minutes at least every hour, sometimes every half hour (quite a few of them do) - while us non smokers keep pounding away at our job. I brought it up with the other department managers one day, we do not pay these guys to stand around smoking, we pay them to work. The biggest problem? Our state manager is a heavy smoker  He has even put little smoking shelters in the yard for them, with chairs, so they can sit comfortably out of the sun and puff away!!

When my wife initially worked for FEMA, she worked in the "disasters assistance" division. To use the bathroom you had to clock out and then clock back in. Not many smoked at work for obvious reasons. But I don't want to be timed to te second of when I am at work etc.

That would not be fun. Especially if you had a day of 'upset' and had to visit often. I certainly do not want my time to be micromanaged that much.

Lightroom presets? Nah, not I.

Not sure what I did to my ankle last month but it hurt like a sob then cleared up after I noticed a bruise.

Tonight, same ankle, same area, same pain - can hardly move it. Not a happy bunny :(
