I definitely need new buddies. Your buddies bring planes to the party, my buddies come to borrow tools. :(

Mine borrows my tools, my truck and my labor...

How bad are Tiffen UV filters?

I want to get one or two for an event we have going on next week for young life. It's sort of like a color run, but without the organized run and more just mass chaos...

So I might try and shoot, and I have rain covers for my camera, lenses, flash etc, but I'd like something to cover the front element.

They're not all that good. Might as well pull a sheet of Saran Wrap over the front. But for the situation, sounds like your clientele won't be overly critical about IQ.

I haven't used Tiffen in some time but from what I remember and what I read, they are up there with Hoya and B&W. If you are looking for protection though, might want to go with the clear filters instead of the UV. The UV coatings are not needed in digital and the clear ones are usually a few $$ cheaper.

Tiffen may have improved, but they were long "reputed" to be the manufacturers of Canon filters. And Canon filters were suitable for use as drinks coasters, and nothing more.

I've mostly seen UV and plain glass, assuming all else is the same (multicoating, etc.) priced the same, or with the plain glass higher by a buck or two. And "not needed" assumes your camera's UV screening is 100% effective; less than that, and an added UV filter has a multiplicative effect. At altitude and/or in dry air, where UV is less thoroughly filtered by the atmosphere, it could be a real difference.

Yeah, I'll just be tossing them on facebook, nothing crazy. If it were for something more serious I'd invest in some nicer filters.

The crazy thing is they have Tiffen UV filters on all of the lenses we have at work for the 5DII... It's always bugged me... it's a babied camera, why do you need $10 filters on a 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 IS when all you do is shoot in controlled environments.

Thanks, Jon!

Or the hamster have a heart attack!

The thing just sips gas. Has like a five-hour endurance.

Much longer than you want to be aloft at any one time.

Great, Jay, and very cool that the wide framing lets you put the whole thing up as your Facebook "Cover" photo!

I have my private pilot certificate, yes.

Medical Certificate is still good as well. Just don't have the discretionary income to stay current these days.

Flying is like owning a boat, only worse...

A really bad exposure blend of yours truly as Pilot In Command:
