PP44, on the other hand is sure he's going back to canon. And since he's always preferred crop cameras to FF, he's looking at a 7D.

I haven't made up any firm direction in what I want to do.

Part of me doesn't want to spend a lot of $ on something, just in case my health gets worse again. (Right now it's doing very well.) On the other hand, I miss my gear. I used it when I had it and I'd like something I'd be happy with for a long time. I'm not in a "have to acquire the best" phase. I just want something I'll be happy with and can use.

Like, I doubt I'd ever buy a big lens again. That's why I was wondering about the new 70-300L vs. the 70-200 F4IS. That one is a tough call for me. I don't want to haul a 2.8. I hated the 100-400. So those seem like my only options via canon since the off brands are even heavier.

The 70-300L is a very capable lens (best 70-300 lens out there). A buddy of mine has it. Not too heavy and just a very good walk around lens. The Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 is sharper but it also does not have the extra 100mm.

You also have the new 24-70L II with great optics and not as heavy as the original brick. Want something with almost as great optics without that price tag? The New Tamron 24-70 is a fantastic lens with IS (or as Tamron calls it VC first of its kind in this range for any manufacturer).

85 MM lens i would go for the Sigma 85 1.4. A great lens with almost as good IQ as the Canon 85L at a bargain price. Dont want to spend that much? Then you can always pick up the Canon 85 1.8. Not as good but gets the job done.

Wide angle zoom? On Canon the 16-35 is still king but Tokina has a great offering in the 16-28 which gets very very close in the optics department.

Understandable of not wanting to spend so much right now. Omar has given a good list of choices.

Do you even need to go as far as 300mm? People still rave on about the 70-200ISf/4

Yeah, I'll look into the ones he listed (thanks Omar)

and no, not especially. I loved my old 70-200 F4is. I've shot with a lot of lenses over the course of my life and that was one of my favorites.

If it is any help Permy I use the 70-200 f4 IS with a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4 teleconverter. I brought the f4 IS specifically for the smaller size and weight for travel. I don't usually travel by air with my big lens, so the 70-200 + TC is as long as I go. It works pretty well on my 5DII but will throw up an error code after half a dozen shots on my 40D. I don't have the pins taped though, I usually just switch it off and back on again and it is fine again for a while. That way I still get the nice sharp lens, plus a bit of extra length if I need it without lugging a house brick around.

If your sticking with Canon, the 6D has to be by far the best deal out there unless you really need the advanced AF of the MkIII. The 6D is a bit smaller, a bit lighter, has the best high ISO performance of all Canons FF cameras (well, maybe not the 1X) and focuses in near total darkness. But, the AF is basically a souped up version of what the MkII and classic had.

I would love to spend a few hours with one. I have played a little and found the size and fit surprisingly comfortable even after all the nay saying here at POTN. Head on out to your local BB and give one a test drive.

The other one that looks like fin is the new SL1. Boy is that thing tiny and light. Basically a rebel in a much smaller format. As for PP and the 7D, totally go for it. I love my 7D and still use it often even though I have a MkII as well. It's just speedy and accurate and delivers really nice pics.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I've used the Tamron 24-70 VC lens on the 5diii, it was a great lens. Sharp, focused fast. I must say with the combo, I think every shot was in focus. A rare feet compared to my regular rebel body.
