I use my iPad 1, but it's not great, just convenient. For reading books something like a Kindle is a lot better.

You should get a dedicated e-book reader such as the original Kindles or the Nooks. Tablets using LCD/LED displays are more straining to the eye than e-ink based readers. They are also ridiculously cheap now. Only drawback is that they are mostly B&W with limited functionality.

I have a 1st edition Nook which gave me a touchscreen at the bottom in color with wifi:

even for reading techincal books that are A4ish size?

wouldnt the text be too small? i imagine reading lines of code on multiple pages would be troublesome as well and not to mention photography books that has colour images

With a dedicated ebook reader, you can enlarge the font size. And with a tablet with ebook app, you can change the font size as well.
I have a XOOM and I love it. Great for reading and an app to remotely control my DSLR.

Personally I find that the best way to read books it either the book itself or a dedicated ebook reader. I own and love the Kindle Paperwhite.

If you don't want eye-strain, then you need e-ink. But the problem is that there are no viable options for large e-ink readers and the small 6-7" readers squash technical PDF's to unreadable dimensions. If you have a technical book especially formatted for kindle, it's not bad, but most of my books for I.T. reading come in PDF and it's unusable on a screen that small.

Been down this road and the answer is that there isn't a good answer. :(

i've had a couple of Kindles and now have an IPad. I like the IPad. On negative I can find in it is the weight, on 7 hour planes rides it starts to get a little heavy. I'll probably move to the smaller one when this one dies.

screens that refresh (even good ones) are all the same to my eyes. I can't read on an ipad any better than I can a laptop screen or computer monitor.

E-ink doesn't refresh. It changes once and stays permanent like ink on paper. Only changes when the text does.

for regular books my Nook is the king. But now that I have an ipad Mini I am finding myself using it more and more to read because of the whole 1 device thing. my iPad1 was ok, but heavy. So for technical manuals I would still go with a bigger screen than say a basic e-reader. But if its just words on a paper then an e-reader is the way to go.

airbutchie - Joe was definitely right about adding contrast...

For programming books, I can understand an e-ink reader. But for photography books?? I mean, will you be satisfied with looking at poor BW example photos?

Get an iPad or a similar android device. I'd recommend the iPad with retina.

Even for programming a iPad is king.good luck reading code in a 6 or 7 inch tablet of any kind. If only kindle came in a 10 inch flavour
