I've just installed ML on my T2i.

In Liveview mode, as soon as I half-depress the shutter release, the mirror flaps (?why?), the display returns to the normal info screen (non-liveview), and the camera focuses the lens. A full depress of the shutter release then takes the picture.

So, you do not see the image while the camera is focusing in liveview mode. Is this the normal behavior for Magic Lantern?

Check your settings in ML for mirror lock up amd turn it off.

The mirror should retract when you enter "Live View" mode and stay up as long as you remain in LV...Sounds like you have "Quick Mode" AF enabled...Set it to "Live" mode to prevent your problem from happening.

ML mirror lockup is off; Canon mirror lockup is disabled.

I am in Live mode (as per Canon firmware). Does ML have a similar setting?

The flapping mirror seems to indicate "Quick Mode," I agree. It can't be using contrast detect focusing because the mirror flips down on halfshutter. But the camera isn't set to "Quick Mode." So this is not normal ML behavior?

Is there a ML option that forces the use of phase detect focusing?

Could it be due to the lens I'm using (nifty-fifty)?

Any other thoughts?

OK... I continued to play around and discovered the following...

If I'm in movie mode and half-release the shutter, contrast detect focusing (Live mode focusing) is used.

If I'm in one of the PASM modes and turn on Liveview, then a half-release of the shutter uses phase detect focusing (Quick focusing).

So, I guess I can get what I want by shooting pictures in Movie mode. Is Magic Lantern intended to be used only in movie mode?

No, ML has loads of features for still shooters as well. I've never noticed any problems with focusing for me...

7D, 450D | 17-55, 10-22, 55-250, 50 1.8, 580EXII | YN568II | YN622 x3 | Magic Lantern | (Still) Jonesing for a 70-200 2.8...
Turns out a gripped 7D + 622 + 580exII + 70-200 2.8 IS MK2 is BLOODY HEAVY! Who knew?!!

No, the lens that you are using shouldn't make any difference.

I'm not familiar enough with ML to be able to advise you. When you downloaded the ML software a PDF user's manual comes with it. You might want to consult that to see if the problem is addressed there. I'm sure that it is just some overlooked setting somewhere.

Well, I found the reason for my troubles...

ML has an option to enable non-Canon flashes with Liveview. This was the reason I downloaded ML in the first place; and I had this option turned on during all my testing. Unfortunately, their approach for enabling this option is to "tempororily disable Liveview" in order to fire the flash, so Liveview was getting turned off every time I hit the shutter release button.

So, no free lunch: T2i & non-Canon flash implies no Liveview.

I just downloaded ml mainly because
I wanted to know shutter actuation-
and had the same problem with live view.
Every-time I halfway pressed the shutter it
would sound like a photo was taken and go
Back to live view.
Just found the fix-
I went into canon live view function settings
Make sure live view is enabled
and af-mode is set to live mode.
This fixed it!
