I am currently shooting with a 5DmkII but I have a 5DmkIII on the way. I am heading to London and Paris and heading there solo. I was just curious if you guys think there is any reason to bring a flash?

I plan on bringing a 16-35 2.8II and a 70-200 2.8 IS mkI.

Off the top of my head, I can see flash being useful if you are trying to shoot moving objects that you want to freeze... but what is that?

People? I wont have anyone else with me that I want to shoot (at least I think so).

Creatures? Doubtful.

Night time? Most definitely, but thats mostly architecture and with the mkIII I should have enough ISO to get decent shots.

Do you guys think I'm also safe with my lens selection? I also have:

  • Sigma 50 1.4
  • Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro
  • 85mm 1.8

Thanks all!

You're not allowed to use flash in churches/cathedrals and museums... so it's not needed there... Are you taking a tripod with you? you could use the flash to paint with light for architecture similar type shots... but besides that type of stuff, you probably won't need it...

If you're taking your 5dmkiii, then think about a fast prime, 50 should be good as it slots in between your two zooms, and is a good focal length for general shooting... with the mkiii's high iso performance you should be pretty set... I'm still amazed by how clean iso 3200 and even 6400 come out on this camera... if you expose properly, 12800 is also pretty decent... (if you plan on b&w final images its even better!)...

want are your plans in london and paris? might be a bit more helpful if you provide more info on your itinerary...

Should you bring a speedlite? Up to you if you want to bring it along, though there are certain buildings including the previous post, art and photo galleries will get you into a lot of trouble if you intend to use any type of photography

Yeah, carry that 50mm f1.4. And a polarizer filter for glass cases in museums that let you shoot inside (no flash, however).
Canon XTi, 50mm f1.4 @ f1.6, 1/60s, ISO 1600 (which is far surpassed by today's ISO in the 5D3). The 1st image is the whole frame, second cropped and edited.

In all the times I've been to Paris, I've never used a Flash. Now a small Travel Tripod
on the other hand, has been invaluable for night shots. And there are lots of places
for night shots in Paris. And I'm sure London is the same.

Sorry for not clarifying!

Here goes:

I personally do not enjoy museums. I blew threw the Uffizi in an hour. I just dont know how to appreciate them I guess.

I'm actually unsure what I'll be shooting. I like to do architecture and food pictures. Here are a few of the pictures from Italy I took http://www.antsnguyen.com/ (external link)

I am sporting the Lowepro Photo Sport 200 AW (external link) which technically has a compartment for personal gear and a spot for 1 SLR + lens + an additional lens. I'm not even sure if the combo I proposed above will fit into the PS200AW. I'll need to check that.

I also have an old Lowepro Slingshot 200AW which I was hesitant to use in Italy because of pickpockets (I'm assuming I'll be dealing with the same in London/Paris). I also have Lowepro Vertex 300AW which I think would be too bulking for this trip. Then also a Crumpler 4 million dollar bag. Geez I have a lot of bags...

I do have a tripod which fits into the bag a Sirui T-005 (external link) which ends up making the bag decently heavy... then again it wasnt the weight that bothered me, it was the heat (I used it last in October in Italy where it was 80F and unbearably hot). I definitely plan on bringing the tripod.

I'm actually curious... I bet I could light paint with my 300 lumen pocket flash light that I carry with me.

London and Paris were very cool when we went, and that was in July! The 5d mkiii should be awesome with the 16-35 and 70-200.... the 50 1.4 is small and so pocketable no excuse not to take it...

Your blog had a lot of food, architecture and architecture detail shots so you should be covered...

Makes me want to head back to Europe...

You can paint light with your flashlight. 5D3 has a great lcd screen for checking what you are getting. Sorry about the Museum suggestion. I spend at least half my trips in museums and shoot whenever it is allowed. My major aid is a monopod, which can usually go where a tripod is not allowed.

Good luck with using the flashlight, hope the tripod is sturdy.

I love me some food! I think this time around I would like to shoot more street urban photography of people interacting.. Markets, shopping, etc.

The 50 is sorta small it is still 1.11lbs! My concern is whether all 3 lenses + tripod will fit into my camera bag.

Tripod is 2.2lb
70-200 is 3.25lb
16-35 is 1.4lb

Advaitin no worries about the museum rec! I mean thats why I'm here to think outside my usual box to make sure I am not forgetting anything.

The Sirui did fine with the 16-35, 50, 100... unsure how it will handle the 70-200 however!

painting with light means small apertures and loooong exposure times, maybe even a neutral density filter so you have time enough for large subjects or objects--all that requires a tripod that is pretty sturdy.

In my student days I used a flash to paint a large printing press. I used a light meter to gauge the various exposures. The project took me a couple of hours in the press room and much longer than that in the darkroom. If only we had digital then.

Doesnt sound like I'll be light painting then :)

I think I am 95% convinced that I am not going to bring my flash because that would mean having to bring 2 PocketWizards as well and all the cables associated with that.
