Ah...here's the snag, I don't know, because I don't use Lightroom. But I can see that this might be an editing software-related issue too. I use lowly Elements for now.

Lightroom backs up specifically its Catalog file, the .lrcat file ...an SQL-Lite database file which tells LR where to find each RAW photo file and what combination of edit actions to perform on each RAW file. LR does NOT cause the storage of a backup copy of each of the RAW files themselves.

Use Time Machine on one drive. That will give you hourly, daily, and weekly backups of everything without ever requiring any effort from you. Use Carbon Copy Cloner, Super Duper, or some other similar software to create backups or clones of your drive on your second external.

I like the my photos in three locations. On my computer (RAW+JPG edits), eternal drive (RAW), and online (JPG).

And I was referring to the Import dialog where you can specify a second (and maybe a third, Im not sure as I dont use the feature) storage location where you want the RAW files copied. Then yea I guess youd have to have your automatic backup pop-up backup your catalog to that second location as well when you do your regular LR backup.
