Best lens to compliment a 70-200 ii?

In a couple weeks I'll be purchasing used a 5D ii and 70-200mm ii and should have about $1000 more to spend on another lens(es).

I'm really torn between either the Zeiss 50mm f/2 Makro-Planar or the new Sigma 35mm f/1.4. Leaning towards the Zeiss because the more pictures I see the more I want it
It REALLY stands out.


So for those of you that frequent the 70-200 ii, what is your go to #2?
Primes and zooms allowed.

Depends what other lenses you have. If the 70-200 is your only lens and you're looking for something to complement it, I would recommend the 35 to cover your wide angle needs. I used a 35L and 70-200 exclusively back when I was shooting full frame. I have since downsized and still miss that setup.

4 years ago I was a young grasshopper on this wonderful site but regretfully sold all of my gear. So I have zilch at the moment.

Did you sell all of your gear to buy an HDTV to entertain your friends? lol

Get a used 24-105 and a cheap prime for fun or times you want to go light ( 40 2.8 or 50 etc. )

24-105 is still a great lens and now you can get them under $800. Save for a flash

well it IS a nice tv, even today:p

If I could only have two lenses, they would be a 24-70 and a 70-200.

Agreed as well. The 24-70II will compliment the 70-200II very well. I'm also chasing that lens as well and I'm waiting for the price to drop. I use my 24-70L 99% of time.

When I owned the 17-55 back in the day it was my most used lens even with the 70-200 IS mk I. Prices deff need to drop on the 24-70 ii, but who knows how long that will take. But for now I'm looking at primes...they do increase my creativity.

I agree with this above too but if you only have 1k left to spend I would pick up a new 24-105. At least you would have most of the range covered and this is one of the best lenses for under 1k.

I like these suggestions - both excellent lenses:
Sigma 35
Canon 24-105

Tamron 24-70 VC (may be able to find one used close to your budget?)
Canon 24-70 V1 (there's one listed on FM for $1050)

If you're considering the Zeiss then you're okay with manual focusing... maybe the Samyang 35?

Canon 17-40 or Tokina 16-28 + Canon/Sigma 50 1.4?

Lots of fun to be had for $1000.

Sigma 35 1.4
Canon 24-105 4 IS

I'll be selling the 24-105 and upgrading to the 24-70 II soon.

I'll be content with those three in the bag for a while I think.
