To do it correctly you would have a range of dates depending on what year the oldest thing and the newest thing are on the site. In other words if the oldest thing is 3 years old and you just added something it would be "Copyright 2010-2013" Items do not get re-copyrighted simply because the year changes.

But in the US, putting copyright (year(s)) on a website doesn't mean anything legally. If you are truly worried about someone stealing something, then register your work. otherwise the Copyright from 2002-2013 lets anyone who reads your website know that it is recently updated (within the year anyways) and that you have been around for however many years. "publishing" is simply "made public" It does not have to me printed by a big printer for profit. Or any other of the myths. It simply has to be available for public viewing. So indeed you can copyright your website. So, the date is not meaningless. If it were nobody would do it.

The Berne Convention in 1988 did away with this. You may be able to claim that it was willful infringement with the copyright notice there, but it doesn't guarantee it so (and I wouldn't count on that making the difference).
