Need some suggestions as to what I should buy to start my kit (I still need the filter holder)? I have about $400 dollars to spend. What would you guys recommend for sunsets, clouds, and water?

Holder, wide angle adapter ring, 2-stop and 3-stop hard grad, 2 and 3 stop soft grad, Big Stopper and square CPL are the things I'd target. Since those will all add up to more than your $400, I'd get the 3 stops and CPL, then the 2 stops and Big Stopper as funds/time allow.

I would start with a ND Grad 0.9 hard & Soft and a 0.6 Hard + Big Stopper or 0.9 ND ProGlass

And you can later at the CPL filter and extra ND & GND filters

Lee Graduated ND set (.3, .6, .9) - soft, along with Big Stopper, and the Foundation kit. ;)

Honestly, if I were doing it over again, I'd skip the sets simply because the 1-stop (.3) filters are almost never enough; I use the 2 and 3-stops (.6 and .9, respectively) individually, or stacked, a lot, but nearly never the 1-stops.

Mix and match from the rest of the suggestions, though :)

While we're on this . . . I don't get how the little brass knob is supposed to work on the side of the holder. Mine doesn't stay in any particular position . . .

It's just a pull tab, basically. It's so you can withdraw the holding tab that keeps the adapter ring attached to the holder. Not sure if that answers your question, or not.

It's not suppose to. It's holds the kit holder to the adapter and it should stick out a little bit (looking like it's not in all the way). It should be enough to hold it tight and not fall but loose enough to spin the filter holder for the filters, like a CPL.

That is what I thought, but it is looser than is reasonable. It holds, but not well enough to keep me from being nervous.

Thanks.

I would go for:
- ND Hard grad: (0.3, 0.6, 0.9) (Could be used as full ND too)
- ND Soft grad: (0.6)
- 4x4 Polarizer
- Bigstopper

Next to a foundation kit and adapter.

Are you trying to step down or step up. I have a 77mm adapter but ended up picking up step up rings for my lens that has a 72mm threads. But stepping down might cause vignetting.

I don't have the kit yet I just feel $30-60 is a bit high for an adapter ring...

eBay has 3rd party adapter rings. No idea how good they are, but it's just a metal ring. I haven't seen any wide angle adapters, though.

Where are you finding a filter kit? I have been on the waitlist at 2filter forever.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.
