I'm a sucker for super zooms. I don't always have one, but after being without for a while I start to look at the latest and greatest and usually get sucked in.

The FZ200 appears to be the king at the moment, with constant 2.8 lens, although relatively short at 600mm considering where this category is trending. Also is reported to have a stellar video mode, which I'd appreciate, and a high res EVF, among other things.

Meanwhile the SX50 reaches twice as far, lens is more typical 3.4-6.5, and EVF is pretty bad (if it is the same as the SX40, which I think it is).

While it would be nice to have that extra ability to shoot indoors with the 2.8 lens in the Panny, I really hate giving up so much reach and paying a premium to boot. I'm looking at $600 for the FZ200 and $400 for the SX50.

Given that this is sort of a secondary camera for me, and the zoom is the attraction in the first place, it sure makes sense to save $200 and go with Canon. But I'm having trouble ignoring the FZ200. Wondering if anyone has shot both here and can speak to the differences, or just has an opinion based on specs/reviews/research.

Thanks!

The Panasonic has a much better viewfinder than the Canon.

I use a Kodak Brownie

Viewfinder is worse on the Canons for sure, but i'd be willing to bet the image quality is a lot better on the SX40 or SX50!

I think that is very wishful thinking about image quality. Everything I have read points to the FZ200 being clearly ahead in that regard.

I have decided not to buy either of these cameras. I found that I couldn't go with the SX50 because I figured I'd still be wanting the FZ200, and I found I couldn't go that route because $600 is too much to spend on a camera I know I don't really need. And now the superzoom urge has passed. :)

Thanks to all who replied.

Well I probably did exaggerate.

In this review it seems to be a toss up. Some of the SX50 are sharper and some of the FZ200 are sharper.
