I think the 2.8 version are BIG and heavy and a bit pricey, but i like to take pictures in low light. The f4 is more in my pricerange... So, I get the 2.8f with "just changing the ISO a step or two". And getting a little bit noise.

Unless you really need that stop the F4 is a good choice because it's so much cheaper. I went through the same debate and ended up with the f/2.8. Yes, it's about $500 more, BUT it does come with the tripod mount (a $125 option with the f/4) and the extra stop. I eventually will buy the 1.4 extender; the f/2.8 is a better choice if an extender is in your future. If you don't care about a tripod mount or an extender, go with the f/4. If that ends up not suiting your needs, don't worry; you'll lose very little selling it used. Elton Balch

Then do the same thing until you arrive at the f/2.8 IS. "L-everage" is a great thing! Scott

Don't get me wrong, its a great lens....but just not able to maintain good shutter speeds in a variety of conditions without bumping the ISO up.
