Hoya skylight 1B...waste of money?

Just went looking around at my local camera shop, picked up some lens cleaner and tissue. Was looking at the UV filters, wasn't planning on buying any, at least at the time. The salesman said he had two clean but used 58mm Hoya skylights 1Bs and said he I could have em for 5 bucks each. I am bad with impulse buying and said sure. Now i've read that they have a pinkish tint to them. Should I even bother using them? Are they any good? did I waste 10 bucks? or should I just use them if I am ever somewhere where I might need some extra protection. They are for my 50 1.4 and my 85 1.8. Thanks. Oh yeah, I do have hoods for both lenses.

Use 'em when your front element is at risk, or all the time. (I refuse to spark that debate!) White balance around the pink tint if that's an issue.

Actually is a kind of salmon tint, not pink. My advice, don't use them. On those rare occations when add protection is needed use a UV filter. Oh, ALWAYS use the lens hoods.

I always do use the hoods. I wish the 85's hood was as tight as the 50's. (different attachments)

Are they multicoated? If they are I think you didn't waste your money, but for protection people usually use UV filters. I'm not sure will 1B cause unwanted change in color rendering.

AWB or CWB will factor that colour cast in. And it's light enough that all it'll really do is kill a little of the high-end blue which won't be even noticeable in daylight. Won't do much to tungsten even. If they're multicoated, you got yourself a deal. Use 'em and don't worry.

Yes, I too have an issue with the way Canon decided to construct the hood for the 85. Makes no sense to me.

I haven't had a problem yet, but i wouldn't pick the lens up by the hood, thats for sure! The 50s hood is such a good fit. It amazes me why they are different
