Ignoring the price.. whats the best fisheye lens out there?

is 8-15L the best, or is there one better / similar for lower price (in terms of image quality, sharpness etc.)

depends on what you're looking for. I was recently looking for a fisheye, and while I'm sure the 8-15 is great, I had no want or need for a circular fisheye, which the 8-15 is basically until 15mm. So, with that in mind, I didn't want to spend the extra dough on a zoom fisheye, when I'd only use it at 15mm. So, I bought the Sigma 15mm FE and gained f/2.8 instead of the f/4 of the L. If you'll be shooting with it indoors, or in low light, and don't have need/want for the circular fisheye on the 8-15, I'd go for either the Sigma 15mm or the Canon 15mm.

If you want a quality fisheye on a budget and dont mind manual focus and aperture, try the samyang 8mm.

I agree with va_rider. I'm not a big fan of fisheyes tho. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on a 14mm rectilinear lens.

I think answering the original question, the 8-15L is indeed the best. I've been very impressed with it, both in sharpness (out to the edge) and also flare resistance/contrast. In tests I've seen it's even sharper than the 15mm primes. I agree though that the difference is quite small, so if you only want a rectangular frame then it might be hard to justify the price difference.

If like me you have bodies of different sensor size, the 8-15L provides you with three lenses in one: rectangular-frame fisheye for both FF and crop, and circular for FF. Then it's good value.

Mark.

I'm hoping to get the Sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye, for the extra stop of light and because I don't care about circular fisheye. I'm sure the Canon 15mm f/2.8 fisheye would have been fine too, but I'd prefer a currently in production lens.

8-15 is the best, but you have to pay to play

Well said. Lensrentals has a good summary of fisheyes here:

Note what they say about the difference between the Sigma and Canon.
