The majority of them look terribly soft. Maybe check the micro-focus on your camera/lens combo?

These look a lot like mine.
I cannot seem to get crisp pictures of hockey.
Shooting with a 60D and 70/200 2.8.
I think I am having some focus issues.
What is this micro-focus you speak of?

Yes some of them do look soft, I think the biggest contributor to that is at the beginning of the game when they announce starting lineups they pump a bunch of fog into the rink, and it takes at least the whole first period to get it to clear out, if not longer. However, I have not checked my micro adjustment for my new 70-200, so I will have to do that as well.

I suspect the issue has nothing to do with the fog. I don't have an EXIF viewer so perhaps share what your basic setting are and what AF settings you are using.

At this level of hockey I am usually shooting at 1/800 and an aperture of f2.8 to f3.5 depending on how much DOF I feel like and will adjust ISO accordingly. If you are not shooting that fast on shutter, boost ISO to do so. Try 1/800, f3.2 and ISO 4000 if the 7D goes there which I think it does. Adjust as needed if things are too bright or dark, but don't drop shutter lower than 1/640. If images are a bit dark that is OK as you can boost in post and apply NR as needed.

My latest set in a rink that has lighting that looks similar to your was shot at ISO 5000, 1/800 and f3.2 and I bumped exposure another +1.9 in post. Price we pay for dark rinks. Results are at http://christianjstewart.zenfolio.com/p171352122 (external link)

If this is the 7D and 70-200 combo, I suspect it is a focus issue, either in how you are focusing, and/or some micro adjustment needed. These are all blurry throughout and don't appear to be front or back focusing.

Are you shooting in AI Servo Mode? Are you using centre point only? Do you use the back * button to start AF or the shutter half-press?

Hockey can be a tough and frustrating sport to shoot if you don't have the right gear or don't know the gear you have.

Tweak a few things, post more details and we can all help you out some more.

sorry haven't checked this in a while. I believe they were all shot at 1/640 f2.8 iso2500. they were with the 1d3. I usually like to use the 7D for hockey because its easier to tell how sharp the images are on the better screen it has, but I didn't have it with me this time. I use the * button for focus, AI servo, center point, tracking priority.
