Maybe the wrong thread to ask but anyway. There's a double cashback in Belgium for another 3 days and I defintely am looking to get a nice, fast prime to complement my 18-55 on the XT2. I take a lot of shots of the kids and the dog indoors, so fast is nice. There's no cashback on the F2 primes, so I'm kinda debating to get either one of these :
* 23/1.4
* 35/1.4
* 56/1.2
On my a6300 I used the Z24/1.8 a lot and love that lens, so the 23/1.4 seems like an obvious choice but I wonder how it performs wide open and if the AF won't be too slow. The 35 is a focal lenght I never had, so maybe I would be better waiting for the F2 for that one. The 56/1.2 is of course very good but I rented it before and found it pretty slow in AF too on the XT2. I do use the SEL50 on the Sony quite a bit too, so a 23 and 56 are definitely lenses which would suit me fine.

Any advice? Are the F1.4's very slow for AF like I read on the web? For reference, I find the 18-55 pretty fast.

On a side note, there's a pretty large cashback on the 50-200 too, so I might grab that one instead and go for the F2 primes later on. Any advice appreciated!

I've had or have all three. The 35 FL is kinda boring on the crop. I really like the 23. You've rented the 56, so I'm not going to comment on it.

The AF on the 1.4/23 is not the fastest but not slow like the 35 or 56. Although I find the AF speed fine most of the time on my X-PRO2 with all three when shooting my kids. Nothing like as good as a 5D3 with a 24-70 f2.8 with Canon flash's AF assist helping out due to the low light. That is fast & if that is the kind of AF you are looking for you'll not be happy.

The 1.4/23 is a mighty fine lens in every regard, nice sharpness good OOF rendering and good contrast & colours. If you like the angle of view it gives go for it or the 2/23. Loose one stop but gain AF speed.

I can't complain on the 23/1.4 or the 56/1.2 really but then I'm comparing to the A7 & 35/2.8

I can't even recall how my Canon stuff compared with anything as it's been too long.

Canon stuff is substantially faster .....except for the PIG SLOW AF 85Lmk2 :)

I documented an Epic 110yrs Anniversary event at a Japanese language school locally. I couldn't have imagined using my 16mpx Fuji bodies for that event.

I'll have to say turning off exposure preview and using manual flash as well as remote triggering flash on a practice session I admit felt substantially slower in response. I felt both in my navigation and using primitive flash is out of my comfort zone.

I have alot of growing to do when I eventually pickup 2x X-T2's if I decide to go the fuji route for events work.

Glad you posted this, I was eyeing those deals too. Trouble is I can't decide between a variety of choices. A 10-24 would be nice for landscapes but have had a Sigma 10-20 and used it sparingly. Then I thought a 23/1.4 together with the 56/1.2 would allow limited landscapes @23mm ( I also have the 18/2 ) with some shots of the kids, with the 56mm great for close ups of the kids/family ( I have the 35/1.4 for this too )

Having used the 35/1.4 on an X Pro1 I thought the slow AF was a body thing and not the lens. The 16-55/2.8 has great reviews and will be a one body/lens bag for me as weight is very important with 2 kids under 4 and another due in 4 months.

Any advice from anyone with any input would be appreciated, deal ends tomorrow :-)

I'd honestly buy the 16mm (24mm equiv). This is a wide angle fast prime that documents a lot in the field of view indoors for family documentation.

I'll be buying a 23mm f/2 since I find the 35mm equiv seldom used but handy to have. Fuji 35mm f/1.4 or f/2 is more portrait or very specific due to focal length with less environmental story telling in the background.

Selecting focal lengths is very personal. Picking up a 56mm would be a portrait lens for me. For events documentation I'd take a 70-200 (or equiv) for family or event work. If I had to stretch my comfort zone I'd take a 56mm for the long and a 16mm or 10-24mm for the UWA/wide depending on light conditions.

For overall nice versatility the 18-55 kit lens is a sweet spot in price and performance.

Are you a zoom guy mostly?? or prime???

Hi Alan.

I've always had zooms with my Canon gear. I prefer wildlife photography to be honest, but having such a young family I realise that having free time just isn't going to happen any time soon. So for now, family/landscapes are the short term future ( 3 years or so ). I'll probably get a 7D3 and Sigma 150-600 Art in a few years when I get some free time back from nappies/bottles/spoon feeding :-D

I'd rejected the 16mm/1.4 due to it being so close to my 18/2, I did consider it initially with the 56/1.2 and my 35/1.4 in the middle. When I say family shots I meant outside as we walk a lot with the kids. I thought 23mm was better for those type of situations.

Someone had posted they felt their 16-55 could replace their primes which had me curious.

I took my X Pro1, 18/2 and 35/1.4 out yesterday in a shoulderbag, and hardly felt it was there. It's so easy to slide it round and get a body out. In the last few years I've taken my 7D, 16-35/4 and either my 70-200 or 100-400 and never even taken my rucksack off due to it being so cumbersome to get it out and maybe swap lens. So, I've lugged it around all day for nothing. My 70-200 hasn't taken a 1000 shots, neither has my 16-35...............

Slow AF on 56mm f1.2 on older XT1 taken at f1.4. I think I use central zone mode in AF-C. If XT2 allows cluster of AF points where I can put them on the face, it will be better.

BTW - I have 23mm f1.4, 35mm f1.4, 56mm f1.2 and 90mm f2. For general shots I use 23mm f1.4. It is quite nice lens. I don't shoot AF-C mode with even if AF is little slower, it doesn't matter. I never try to get all the shots, a few good quality shots better than everything for me. 35mm f1.4 has the best colors but I don't like 50mm focal length. 56mm f1.2 I use mainly for my models shots. Works nice for single kid shots also. 90mm f2 I just bought to see what it was, end up using 56mm f1.2 lot more.

I had the 35/1.4 but sold it and got the 35/2. I'm one of the few that likes the 50mm focal length...probably because back when I had Canon, my favorite combo was the 5D II and 50L lens.

Currently with Fuji I have the 23/1.4, 35/2, 56/1.2, and 90/2. The 35/2 is the one usually always on my X-Pro2. the 56 and 90mm I've used for my son's soccer games. the 90mm being faster at focusing than the 56mm, but sometimes I don't need 90mm. The 23mm I'm starting to use more now that I have 2 kids bouncing around.

Any of them should be fine on an X-T2, always go with whichever FL you prefer/need.

I've had or have all three. The 35 FL is kinda boring on the crop. I really like the 23. You've rented the 56, so I'm not going to comment on it.

That's just like, your opinion man ;)

My 35/1.4 is easily my favorite lens to use with my X-Pro2.

Another lens that's great and won't break anyone's bank (I paid $200 for mine if I remember right) is the Samyang 21mm f1.4, here's some shots with it on the X-Pro2

I've currently just got the 23/1.4 as a 'wide' option but if I were to go dedicated landscape I'd probably pick up the Samyang 12mm from what I've heard & read.

I used to LOVE 50mm on FF [5D2 & 50/1.4] then I went Sony A7, didn't like the 55/1.8, got into the Voigtlander 40/1.4 in a BIG way & so I've gone for the 23/1.4 for Fuji as a 35mm equiv. I also love the 56/1.2 & thought the 23mm would pair better than the 35mm.......
