Random question Kim, do you use a light meter for your studio work?

No I don't, a couple of shots in test before the shoot is all I usually do, just to make sure I get tone. The set up of power to distance and the settings of the camera kinda come quickly after that. I think if you know your modifiers and your lights your best guess will, usually, be close enough for a starting point.

You thinking of buying one?

I was thinking about it, but I already have the F-stop pre thought out in my head before the shoot.

I set my Aperture and iso first, take a test shot and adjust the light power to my taste. With the shutter I either blend a little of ambient or kill it off completely. This process is pretty quick with mirrorless because of WYSIWYG(what you see is what you get) so I'm not sure if it will be essential tool. Just a random thought.

I just saw that our very own EverydayGetaway got a plug from Fuji Rumors for his blog defending the honor of the XF 18mm. Nice.

Thanks :) I'm actually surprised it's gotten such positive feedback so far, and ironic that another guy just happened to write about the same thing at the same time. Seems there is more love out there for the 18mm than I thought there was! :)

Here's some of the coaches/instructors I met at camp a few weeks ago. These guys were a riot. A few of them were complaining about being hungry because they missed out on dinner that night for one reason or another (camp dinner ends at 6 and the places you can buy it close at 9) so I went up to my room and brought down all the left over Cup-of-Noodle and EasyMac I had... they were greatful

These days, you will find people who have "the religion" on either side of the meter question. As with all "religious" questions, the best answer is individual choice. It's kind of like the force--there is a light (meter) side and a dark side :).

For film, a meter was essential using studio strobes. At first with digital, I used my meter because it was what I was used to from film. Soon enough, I wouldn't bother to dig out the meter because I was close enough to dial it in. And for most uses, this is plenty close.

But I've been converting back to the other side, especially when I'm not tethered and just have the back of the camera to go by. Sure, it can all be adjusted in post within reasonable bounds (i.e. if it looks right on the LCD and camera histogram, it isn't very far off already).

A nagging sense that really precise exposure does improve the quality for prints, especially if you are pushing up the size, has been taking over.

I have a meter I trust, a Gossen Luna Star F. But a Sekonic L 758 became available used and I gave in, mostly for the convenient spot flash meter option, although I appreciate the complex calibration options.

So I seem to be going back to the church of my younger days...

If you decide you want to try it, there are plenty of good, used flash meters on the market, so you don't have to invest so much to try it out.

Thanks for the advice in regards to printing!

In studio, if you are using lights, there is a good case for one alright as you can't 'see' the exposure in the EVF as you might normally do. In that way a meter could be handy I've just never hankered after one but, for now, I feel its one more thing to have to deal with.

Over your next few shots write down your settings with a rough diagram of your set up including, modifiers, flash power etc... & distances. I bet you'll see a pattern in there that you will recognise quickly.

Does anyone in here have the XF 60/2.4?

I went and tried one out side by side with the 50/2 yesterday and I'm leaning hard toward getting the 60mm. The focus really didn't seem any slower to me than my 35/1.4 and the extra little bit of reach was surprisingly noticeable over the 50mm. Anyone have any thoughts on it or first hand experience?

Also, got to try the guy in the first photo below's 56/1.2... that thing is pretty darn sweet.

We don't hear much about it around here. I haven't ruled out the 60, but I'm patiently awaiting what might develop with the new 80mm version.

The 60mm produces a sweet image.

There are only three down-sides.

1. Slower focus (you have already decided it is good enough). Check

2. Slower aperture at f2.4.

3. The lens moves in and out as it is focusing. If it is confused and goes to super-close focus, it gets a lot longer. I find this potentially distracting for subjects.

If these are ok with you, get it. It is a great lens.

Not to mention it does macro down to 1:2.

Yeah, I'm definitely leaning towards getting it. Right now my go-to lightweight multi-lens kit is my X-Pro2, 18mm, 35mm and adapted 50-58mm prime. I'm thinking the 60mm will make a nice replacement for the vintage lens with macro as an added bonus.

I also found out recently about it being able to use the same hood as my 18 and 35mm and that's definitely a plus to me, tried it in the store and it works fine (though I doubt how much it'll actually prevent flare).

I did not know the bit about the hood. It will probably help against flare, depending on the angle of the light source.

Interestingly, the 18/2, 35/1.4 and 60/2.4 are the original trinity, the three lenses initially released with the Xpro1.
