Question:

So currently, when using manual focus on my X100S, when I press the shutter, I can no longer manually focus and see focus peaking at the same time. Anyone know of a way to change it so that I can still see focus peaking while half pressing the shutter to meter? I find it a bit too clunky/slow to have to not be pressing the shutter half way. You lose time. Ideas?

On that same note, I'm curious how the X-T1 behaves with this? Can one manual focus with focus peaking while half-depressing the shutter?

Any settings I should be changing to allow me to keep focus peaking while half-depressing the shutter (metering)?

Very best,

get ready for the eye brows .. awesome but distracting ..

jokes aside .. piximperfect has become , my favorite for this

I watched two video of the Indian dude on LR curves and Dodging/Burning. I think I leaned a lot more than watching these videos of famous photographers showing their editing schemes.

I haven't used MF on Fuji but I thought folks set that back button (AF-L) for focus even when in MF mode. Let us see what the regulars say. Fuji is the only cameras where I am not using back button focusing even in AF mode.

yep. as a Canon user I always used back button focus. On Fuji it just feels odd.

I keep going back and forth on getting and x100f or not.

Right now my x-e2 with 27mm is my day to day camera. So I keep thinking why not sell the x-e2 and 27 and switch to the x100f (would want the 'f' for the simple fact that it now uses the same batteries as the x-t2). But do I really want to put $800 toward a camera (after selling the x-e2 and 27) and also no longer have a back up interchangeable lens camera?

I'm just overthinking the hell out of this!

Yea, my question isn't about back-button-focus, it's about manual focus with focus peaking assistance enabled in the EVF and real time focusing while pressing the shutter button half-way to meter so that the moment you're focused where you want to be via the peak focusing highlights, you can finish pressing the shutter and get your exposure. Instead, you cannot do this. You can manually focus with peak focusing, but the moment you press the shutter to meter, peak focusing goes away so you don't know if you're where you wanted to be as you press the shutter button. Just seems like something that we could disable. So I'm looking for a way to do that. I want focus peaking to work at all times, even if I meter, if possible.

Very best,

Very best,

As far as I know there's no way to do that on the X100S. You can however change the AE button to another button, or use the AE lock button.

That's one of the reasons I recommended the X100T, the ERF is fantastic for manual focus lovers.

Played around with it on my X-T2 not sure if it’s possible but I am pretty sure Lucas or Kim have the answer.

Very best,

Yes you can do it on the X-T1 and probably on any other Fuji camera that runs the same series of firmware.

First you need to set Focus Check to OFF ( it's in the screen setup section of the menu). Then you need to assign a button for focus, I use the AE-L button on the X-T1. That's it.

So to make it work you just press the AE-L ( or what ever button you chose ) and that will make the camera meter and focus but you can override the focus by starting to twist the focus ring on the lens. Press the shutter button to snap.

Note: You'll need to make sure you have AF+MF set to ON. Menu section 4.

Actually you can forget the back button part of the above once you have the other parts done. Pressing the shutter button will activate the focus mechanism so you can go ahead and twist to use peaking or whatever you set up as a focus aid. Leave the camera in 'S' focus mode - it won't work if you are in manual focus mode. Good no? and not at all confusing. That way your finger will be on the button ready for the press.

Sorry for the confusion, I was shooting a rather long and boring, shoot wise, video today so head in FS700 mode not Fuji mode for once.

Thank you for the info! I wouldn't have thought to take it out of manual focus mode.

I know I've seen a similar video somewhere on this forum (or maybe the Fuji forum). I think the one I remember seeing was about the production of camera bodies. I just came across this one on lenses.

That bit is a little counterintuitive alright. The camera still needs to focus at first, then you get to do what Fuji refer to as 'check focus'. But we really should be able to use peaking or whatever in manual mode with the shutter button pressed, perhaps in the next FW update they'll include it along with swapping over the twin screen in the X-T EVF so the focus zoom is the big screen and you get to still see the composition in the little one....
