Exactly! I don't really see the 18-135mm lens as a pro lens. Considering it have such a long zoom range and a slow variable aperture, it's more or less a consumer grade lens to me. It's really unfortunate that the 10-24mm lens isn't weather sealed as that would be a great companion to the announced pro-grade f/2.8 lenses. I'm still going to get the UWA, but in my opinion this is a lost opportunity on Fuji's part.

I wouldn't discredit the 18-135 just yet. The 18-55, considered by many to be an entry level kit lens in the DSLR world as this is the focal range that often comes with Rebels, by Fuji is quite the performer and generally well praised.

It's not my cup of tea, but it's suppose to be quite the "kit" lens.

^ B & W works really well here with snowy conditions. It creates the mood perfectly suitable for the cold, dark, and gloomy times.

But for me, the silhouette of the man in dark coat walking on the platform truly makes the image.

Nicely done.

Has anyone here actually damaged or lost a lens - weather-sealed or not - from shooting in bad weather or otherwise harsh conditions?

Lens, no. 5Dii? Yep. 580exII? Yep. But not a lens yet. My gear is insured. I'd prefer my gear be as sealed as possible. But that doesn't mean I baby it or stop shooting if it's getting a little wet. Basically, if I can shoot w/o water on the front element being a major PITA, I shoot. But once it's raining hard enough I've got that issue then I stop.... But that hasn't stopped me front going out in a hurricane!

oh, and the real version of the shot from the top of this page (and one of me) from the other night:

I'm really liking the XA1... Tiny and pocketable with the 18mm. The only thing I don't love, or I should say I miss from my NEX is that it had the 16mm pancake (not as nice as the 18) but it had a fisheye adapter to go on it. It was nice not having to remove a lens revealing the sensor while outside on the snow (or worse, on a chairlift)... I prefer the fuji in every other way, but I'm tempted to pick up a used NEX5 with 16 and FE adapter just for that reason...

Hell, I've shot with cloth wipes in my pocket to wipe the filters or front element between shots, and the gear was fine (pics too! :p).

Well, Fuji is a bit of an exception here. Their 18-55mm lens is also much faster than its competitors' 18-55mm lenses.

But the 18-135 doesn't seem to be. Maybe optically it'll be as good (relative to other 18-135s) as the 18-55, but it doesn't change the fact that it's f/5.6 on the long end...

I suppose if Fuji doesn't do a half ass job on that lens and actually builds a good optical performing lens then some people will be happy. I have no use for that lens. I already have both the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses. If only they were weather sealed...

the fact they're sealing the 18-135 suggests it's going to be a pretty good lens. Also, they've yet to make a bad lens really. The non XRs aren't quite as stellar as the XRs but they're still better than typical kit lenses IMHO. The 18-135 is yet another XR so I'm expecting good things. I had a 55-200 for a few weeks (bought a kit on FM and parted it out). It's a fantastic lens and much smaller than my 70-300 for canon, BUT!!! It's awkward on the XE1/XE2 IMHO. Maybe with the new XT1 I'll reconsider it. But as of now I'm looking heavily at the 10-24 and 18-135 as my landscape duo. For my 5Diii right now it's the 16-25 and 70-300. I'll lose some on the long end, but not much, and I'll also have from 10-135 covered (15-200 equivalent). And of course for scapes it's all stopped down anyway so most any lens is good enough there. I'm more worried about how it'll handle flare.

trust me, shooting waterfalls and seascapes as much as I have I've soaked front elements PLENTY! I actually kept my 77mm CP and 10-stop when I got into my Lee CP and big stopper just so when I'm in that situation I only have to dry the outer layer of glass, not ALL the sides!

and thanks, yeah, I love that shot as well.

Going skiing with the XA1 again tomorrow again with the fish and 18mm. I also have a 27mm here so hopefully I'll play with it as well. I got a 52mm to 30mm step down ring for the 18 in the mail today so I can pocket it w/o the lenscap which is a sweet setup for skiing.

A streetportrait from today, shot with the Fujifilm X100S. Yes you can shoot portraits with this camera just fine.
