I love the look of the OVF, but man, I am missing almost every shot at closer range. Like, not by a tiny bit, but completely not in the same ball park. It's the parallax correction or whatever, and I've read up on it enough to know how it works, but it's still confusing:

- if I AF on something, and the corrected green box appears... do I need to recompose and put the actual focus box on that same spot the correct box had appeared?

or

- if I AF on something, and the corrected green box appears... do I need to recompose and put the actual focus box further up and to the left, the same distance away as the corrected box had appeared away from the original point of focus?

Yeah, some mental gymnastics on this one...

Fuji say you don't need to recompose

"Real Time Parallax Correction
Parallax, i.e. a displacement of the shooting frame in the viewfinder from the actual area to be photographed especially in close-ups, is automatically corrected in real time. Even in OVF mode, the X100F automatically corrects the position of the shooting frame and focus area upon focusing, and displays them correctly for more accurate composition".

I think MatthewK is saying he's missing shots because of the auto-correction. That means he should actually recompose to compensate for the autocorrection.

The parallax correction effectively serves the purpose of "what you see is what you get". Without it, the OVF will deliver a different angle of view from what the sensor sees. And this effect is magnified in close distanges.

With the OVF, in close distances, the auto-correction, indeed, often feels unintuitive. And that's simply because the camera doesn't care about what you're trying to frame. But it's willing to give you a hint that the sensor sees something else than what you're seeing.

Most, if not all, of us frame first and then focus. With AF on in close-ups, the parallax correction will shift your "true" frame (as perceived by the the sensor) down-right from where you originally thought you were composing. Annoyingly, though understandably, your focus point also shifts along with the frame.

So the camera is basically saying "Btw, this is the frame I'm going to give. Check and recompose if you don't like it." With that I think the answer to MatthewK's question is the latter of the two alternatives. Compose -> AF -> recompose/compensate -> take the picture.

I generally prefer OVF over EVF in many instances. But with X100F, this is exactly the reason why I rarely use OVF. But that's how physics works. So what can you do...

I simply use the joystick to move the box over if the corrected frame is not to my liking. . ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I use Sandisk Extreme Pro SD cards. Anytime I buy one, it comes with a free trial of Rescue Pro Deluxe.

I actually had to use it this morning.

I was going through my photos, and I couldn't find a folder of images I had taken back in June. I probably looked for over an hour where they should be. Checked my backup drive, cloud backup. nada.

Then I remembered I was editing those photos on my laptop where I dragged and dropped the folder to my desktop. At some point I cleaned off my desktop.

Rescue Pro was able to recover those files from a formatted SD card. WHEW. :-D

That wouldn't really solve MatthewK's problem since he seems to be troubled by the "missed shots". If you're not moving the camera, but only your focus point, then you're still getting the same frame you originally eyed for.

well yes, when I frame a shot, that's what I want, but if the focus point is not focused on a person's face, for example, I'll move the focus point so the corrected green square falls on the subject's face. Granted I may have to adjust slightly as the frame does move when it's correcting.

Although I prefer the other shot we did four poses, I usually only do one but that face...
Here's the second choice for me out of the four. I was going to do B&W but somehow the colour just works better, least to my eyes
