After using the 56 1.2 for about a year and tons of images. I will say its not a lens for any type of movement. It does hunt a good bit and will rack focus alot trying to find its target. I have been contemplating moving from the 56 to the 50 for the faster focus. The lens gave me a good bit of hunting and missed shots last year at Disney during a night parade. It would hunt alot even with good well lit contrasty subjects. Dont get me wrong I really like the lens and gives great images but in any lower light situation it isnt the best choice for even people just walking.

I guess it depends on the type of movement. I used the 56mm lens exclusively during my son's soccer seasons when he was 4 and 5 years old. Granted, kids that age aren't moving super fast, but fast and erratic across a soccer field, and the majority of my shots were keepers.

:-P

In addition to the 23/1.4, 56/1.2, and 50-140/2.8 lenses I currently own, I used to own the 35/1.4, and 90/2. I miss BOTH of them. I sold the 35/1.4 when I got the 35/2, but ended up selling the 35/2 because it didn't have that 'magic' the 1.4 did... Sold the 90 because I had to get the 50-140 for Soccer, and felt kind of bad having overlapping focal lengths.

Having said that... the 50-140 is a great lens. Sure it huge and won't do f/2, but if I want shallow depth of field I'll just bring out the 56/1.2

Serious question, not looking to start brand/mirrorless/SLR-wars here, but I know most of us here with a Fuji system started with another system or may still have other systems, and that's the exact experience I'm looking to tap into, to make a better comparison for a real world usage between Fuji and my other systems for a future lens purchase:

Disclaimer: I don't have any AF Fuji lenses. I just use Fuji bodies with Samyan/Rokinon F1.2 & F1.4 glass. Otherwise, I could test this myself, but I just don't have any experience with AF on Fuji systems other than my X100S, which does a great job on its own, but I've not used it for tracking a kid running around outside, as I know it's not up the that task and is fairly dated.

I love my X-T2 and use it for Street Photography. But when I shoot sports and I use my Canon 5DIII. There is just a lag with the Fuji that isn't there with the Canon.

I am guessing thats during the daytime. I am talking any type of low light and movement is where the lens seems to fall apart and starts to do alot of hunting and fails to lock on. I never really have any issues of it during daylight

Thanks Dan, I ultimately did just get an inexpensive 50mm for my 1D and called it a day. It's done the job I needed so far. I am very interested to get a 35mm F2 Fuji soon, just to have one standard AF lens eventually, but for action and beating up a mechanical shutter, my 1D just does that better for now and I don't mind wearing it out on frivolous family photojournalism basically. I simulated the DOF and FOV and my 50mm at F2.5 on my 1D is what the Fuji 35mm F2 would be on my X-T1, approximately, which I am happy with either way. So I know eventually when I add the 35 Fuji I'll likely be happy with it for its purpose (which will be family use, where AF is needed as I will not always be the one behind the camera and often will be using it via remote and will appreciate AF then). I just got my Rovelight 600B working with HSS with my Fuji natively after a break from lights due to switching to Fuji and not having all the R2 family transmitters available, but the R2 TTL transmitter and stock Rovelight V2 remote trips HSS on my Rovelight without any special adapter/dongle/receiver and syncs with my X-T1 beautifully all the way to 1/4000s, so finally back into that after a spell with only speedlites.

Very best,

The XT3 is much better for AF speed.

Indeed with my XT2 taking simple family documentation I feel this propagation delay. This is definitely not felt with my mirrored canon gear or Sony A73. The difference I feel is zero lag in AF in low light with mirrored bodies. The quad processor in the XT3 is suppose to help in overall af performance.

This is a situation where your lens has breathing room to acquire AF. Even at a wide open aperture the dof is sufficient depth to land the shots on a field. The much cheaper 50 f2 has a much faster af motor to snap the image effortlessly. Also little glass to move compared to the 56mm brother.

I remember getting plenty of lag with the 5D3 when the light got a little low, especially with big glass like the 50/1.4 Art from Sigma or the 85/1.2 attached. Plenty of hunting going on there & the 'IR' from the flash only helps out in some situations, like when the subject is reasonably close, un-obstructed and the camera is on single AF. The magic beam did not fire with continuous AF was selected and when something was in the was it was also useless. X-T3 is great in low light for it's AF, mind you I find the X-PRO2 fine also, even at dark weddings where there is little light. Learning how the AF system works best in that situation was a real eye opener for me. I have no problems obtaining focus these days but of course YMMV...

You didn't try 5dmk4 where Canon fixed all the problems facing them. :p Sensor is awesome, AF is better than 1dxmk2 and it can track at ISO256000, 1/30, f1.2.

I waiting for the 5D9 where the camera's AI figures it out all out for me as I only ever shoot in the pitch black, so all I have to do is turn up.

These arrived in the mail today, nice little things to use for the little play I had, sound is good from the built-in mic. Hoping to use them in on a shoot in a couple of weeks.
