Anyone here shoot motorsports with an XT-2? I shot an event (HPDE circuit) a few weeks ago using my XT-2 and the 100-400, I had the shutter speed locked to 160th and iso locked to 200, but left the aperture at auto. It was a bright day so most of the shots ended up around f/10-f/14... I had the camera set to continuous auto focus (single point set to the largest) with the auto focus mode left on 1, and drive mode set to 8fps... I was also using the 95mb/s Sandisk cards...

It was the first time shooting motorsports with my Fuji gear and regrettably I didn't think to take along the battery booster grip. I found my frame rate dropped in times I didn't expect it to... I know it probably can't compare to my experience with the 5D3 and 100-400mkI, but I felt it the XT-2 could have done a little better... This is by no means my normal genre so I don't expect to have the perfect setup for this type of shooting. I mostly shoot wildlife with the 100-400 and even landscapes believe it or not. Shooting birds in burst does feel the same as shooting a fast moving car and I feel the Fuji system does fine for shooting birds...

I had bursts of 8 frames and didn't experience any slowdown (where it felt I could have kept the shutter pressed longer), but I also had times where it felt like I could barely get more than 3... I am thinking the autofocus might have been the issue, but unsure as it didn't appear to be hunting...

I am going to shoot another event in the fall and debating if I should invest in the faster UHS-II cards. But I am not convinced the cards I have now are the bottleneck.

The "barely get more than 3" moment" was this after doing a long burst? I'm not sure if my 5dmk3 or 5dmk4 has deeper buffers if you rattle off many actuations. Also the 5dmk3 is rated 6 fps but it's not really intended to be a sports camera.

The XT3 is definitely where the XT2 should have been as far as AF speed/body performance. The X-t2 is good as far as a Feb 2017 body but the September 2018 release of the X-t3 is a refreshing fast body.

The Sandisk extreme pro UHSii writes 260MB/s vs the your current card of 90MB/s. If the buffer isn't filled the card "might" be the bottle neck.

Using my X-t2 at the ice rink with my kids I documented my youngest skating for the first time. My 50-140mm combo worked well be I even felt a sluggish lag at times. I'm also using the same Sandisk SD cards you have. Oddly later that month I used my Sony A73 with Gmaster 70-200 and it just didn't slow down at all using identical SPEED SD brand and speed cards. I think the body, in body processor and slower cards collectively made your experience sluggish.

In your area there maybe a "Fuji Try and Buy" program where you can borrow a body/lens for 3 days for free. Your next event I'd suggest looking into such programs and use the xt3 as an actuation pig during your next event and see how the X-t3 performs vs our aging x-t2.

Couple of things that can cause the slowdown. If flicker reduction is on then the higher FPS might not work as fast as they should. If AF is set to focus priority then it can slow down the FPS as it keeps up with a fast moving subject, set it to release priority. Probably not the buffer clearing as it is quite big in the X-T2, good for 33 raw images @ the 8fps. The X-T3 good for 49 shots raw. Shoot compressed raw.

The 5D3 only shoots 6fps and has a rated buffer for 18 shots max, and that's if you have a fast CF card in the slot, if you also or only have a SD card in it's more like 12 shots in the buffer before lockdown.

Might have better luck with the AF-c if you select mode 2. Of course if you are holding the shutter in CH a lot the camera will slow down as if clears the buffer, the little led on the back will flash when it's writing so you might be able to tell if that is what's causing the issue for you.

Of course is you do get the X-T3 you can do 30fps for 60 shots compressed raw, that's insane in use and you should probably have fast USH-ii cards plugged into the slots.

Hanging about a lift waiting on the rest of the gear to be loaded in, video gear takes up a lot of room.

Which ones???

I use the 1004BAC-3 stackables. Those stands have been incredible in portability when I need robust stands.

If you want super stable "portable" stands that can hold a 7 foot octatdome comfortably you should look at the reverse stands from Mathews. almost steroid versions of the flimsy manfrotto nano stands I own.

Hmm I will have to check if I have flicker reduction on, never would have thought to check that... I will check the focus priority too, forgot about that setting, but pretty sure it is set to release all the time just because of when I shoot wildlife... Which is the only time I really use autofocus...

Yeah, that is why I was hesitating just getting the more expensive cards... I didn't want to invest in them if I was only going to get marginal improvements. I just don't shoot like this that often. I never have felt the buffer was the hold up. And at this event I was never even attempting to get anywhere near 30+ shots in a single capture. I was only hitting the shutting in very quick bursts after tracking the car for a sec or two before actually pressing it...

I am trying to think if distance to subject was playing into it any. But I don't think so as I recall having no drop in fps shooting one car, but then having it seemingly struggle when the next one passed despite me shooting from he same spot...

It can be maddening at times this photographic game. More so as cameras get more ‘features’. Hopefully a simple fix to find.

Got a love the catering table, this one was very top class, no bowls of crisps (chips to those over the pond) here. Very much enjoyed filling up. Non nom nom

They are the 1004bac.

I'm very satisfied with them.

Now I need to find a proper case with wheels to carry one plus a godox 600(which ive yet to order) .

I wouldn't use a 600 for every outing , but its good to have the option and if that fits than a pair of speed lights definitely will

I also recieved a proper c stand , though that is most likely only for In studio use.

In other good news.. I've got 2 paid portrair shoots coming!.
I mean like I'm getting paid lol.. rare thing when it comes to photos , although to be fair to myself i do very littl3 , actually i do almost nothing to find paid work. All I have is my instagram,..

A light stand should fit on any reasonable sized roller, something like the Thinktank Airport series ( I use one ) is good to pack some lighting and all those other little bits that you tend to need on location. I even have a 40 C-Stand on mine at times. Was going to buy a production manager 50 so I can put in a few C-Stands and lights etc but the weight once loaded is not fun. Better with a few bags and a cart.

Great on the paid shoots, no pressure though, right? :-) Hope all works well on the day.

Do you have any AD200's?

I find my 600PRO gets very little use because of the two AD200's. They kick ass really.

The plan is a pair of 200's and a 600.

At the moment I have a pair of ad360.
And if i recall correctly the 200s are giving almost the same output as the 360, and combined almost the same as a single 600.

I'll most likely sell my 360s

And I've got 3 or 4 speed lights

Check out the mathews reverse stands. Lighter than our manfrotto stackables and they can comfortably hold my einstein with 70 foot octadome indoors. Extremely big footprint and stable. Just not rigid like the stackables.

I have one AD200 and the ADB2 adapter... I am planning on picking up a second when I can find a used one going for a good price... I also use a pair of TT600s for my still life shooting...

I agree, they are great lights and quite versatile...

Shot this with one AD600 plus with a lonely AD200 on the background for full white. I really dislike when the subject folds one hand under an arm as it always messes with the colours of the skin and looks disjointed to me, much better to have the hand on top of the arm or the fingers curled in. The little things, always the little things...
