I've yet to see many here in the Fuji threads describe light theory, composition, how to use a light meter or general theory of behind the scenes explanations. I've seen a lot of Cat photos, glorification of tactile control knob satisfaction, praise in small form factor and fierce loyalty to aps-c sensor. Most here do not want to ever own a Bulky GFX camera body even though it's light in weight and has superior IQ over the little brother aps-c Fuji bodies.

Funny Alan, I can't recall a single time of you describing light theory, etc. at pretty much any point in this thread (or any other).

AlanU wrote in post #18885168 (external link)
Each to their own here as I see many photos posted with no explanation of how it's been obtained.

Here's an idea... ask. I'm happy to share how I capture any particular photo. I don't feel a need to post any of that information given this is a simple photo sharing thread and Fuji related discussion thread... me posting about what my light setup was or how I posed the subject aren't really the topic of discussion since they have nothing to do with Fuji cameras themselves.

I do not forgive my emphasis on discussing gear. If someone seeks knowledge..ask away. I've seldom seen anyone "ASK" on this forum. Most just post away on images they've created.

See above... where have your questions been Alan? Seems pretty hypocritical, no?

IF people ask questions I'm hopeful I can contribute positively and help others. I know Kim is open to share his knowledge.

I'm just not going to sit in my comfort zone.

Lol... K. Find me 3 examples in this thread of you helping someone with a technical related issue.

Lucas,

You're an observant guy. Have you noticed most here are hobbyists that shoot primarily natural/available light. In fact I do not see many hired photog on this thread let alone using remote flash extensively for events/reception work. Bobby and Kim use strobes but very few ever discuss or use remote strobes/flash.

I even see very little exposing of ambient and fill on subjects with flash on this Fuji forum. A lot here shoot away in a photo journalistic manner or just document whatever comes to them. This is just some applications in photography.

When I use my Canon gear in events I use remote flash for dance floor/reception/events. I've never put effort in using such styles with my Fuji world.

OODEE, appears to want discussion on general photography. This is a Fuji thread and I don't see validity in discussing basic skills of being a photog. I think there are other threads that can cover that basis.

Kim's on top of things here when people ask technical questions. Many questions probably can be answered by reading the operating manuals!!

OODEE,

I didn't know you're the hardware photography police :p

Perhaps I am not clear. If gear is not the issue in IQ output, it's the photographer behind the camera. Not certain if you've misinterpreted my statement. I never intended to say gear will make your skills improve. Developing skills never stops! Technological advances never stops either. I do no see you using an X-E1 with 16-50 kit lens using advanced studio lights setup etc or remote flash events photography or discussion of softboxes or any light modifier......

Good point. I'll accept that. I haven't been active in or around discussions that involve photography skill sets.

Each to their own here as I see many photos posted with no explanation of how it's been obtained.

This is just what-aboutism from your part. The point is not about what others may or may not be doing here.

Not sure about you but I've inadvertently discover new techniques and create my own personal projects/challenges by reading upon someone's latest new tech gear acquisition.

I'm not sure what your challenges are. Mine are about making better and more meaningful photos. So far tech, or reading about it, hasn't really helped. Though it's been fun, for sure.

I have honed my skills in the studio and remote flash work due to reading other photogs experiences using gear. This is my point is that moving forward YOU MUST "almost" keep up with the joneses. If Godox never produced affordable speedlights and ad200, ad400 or ad600 lithium strobes everyone will be stuck using non TTL/HSS old school strobes.

No, moving forward (assuming we're still talking about skill set) does not mean you must keep up with the Joneses. It's the other way around. Godox made no one a better photographer by bringing affordable gear to the market. They just made gear accessible to bigger part of the demand.

And what exactly do you mean by "old school" strobes? I've been working with Elinchrom's Quadra since 2014. Are they old school? They're HSS. And TTL is not exactly going to make you a better photographer, because it decides exposure for you. Plus affordable speedlites have been around at least for the past decade.

Photography specific artificial light has been available for a looong time. And again, limiting yourself (also to non-TTL/HSS) will actually challenge you to develop your skill set. How hard is this?

Creating outdoor images using HSS at 1/8000 flash sync is a revelation to many. Old timers would turn in their grave seeing what we have abundant in tangible photographic products.

That's a technical advantage, not a skill.

IF people ask questions I'm hopeful I can contribute positively and help others. I know Kim is open to share his knowledge.

I'm just not going to sit in my comfort zone.

Don't take this the wrong way. I have nothing against you, and I appreciate your arguments on gear topics. They challenge me to think about things. But I think you actually are in your comfort zone.

Your arguments seriously don't make sense to me, I'm really not trying to be rude.

In your first paragraphs you claim (rather disparagingly btw) that most in this thread don't use flash (with the implication seeming to be that they don't know how)… then in the third paragraph you say that when you're using your Fuji gear specifically you don't tend to use flash either...?

Then you further go on to say that you don't see the need to talk about the very things you were earlier criticizing this thread for not talking about... so... help me out here.

I use my Fuji gear for different purposes and NO event work.

I've been using my Canon gear as a workhorse and I've purchases a lot to support that system. I have been using my Cactus V6mk2 and RF60 flash units. I'm now slowly transitioning to my Sony using Godox V1"s" and will be purchasing a bag full of V860ii lithium units for remote flash work for events. I'll also be getting a Godox V1 "c" for my Canon to utilize my V860II as well.

Things are hanging in a balance as Godox V1 now supports red focus assist grid for my Sony system. I may just sell off and let go my Canon gear or wait for EOS R mk2 with dual memory cards...I know it'll be very unlikely I buy another Fuji aps-c body for a while.

I was just discussing Oodee's comments on how I do not write about the art of photography rather than emphasis on gear. Maybe if people read about gear it stimulates them to see how it works in with their style. Not mandatory to buy gear. Discussing gear may be a catalyst in being a Fire starter in getting us out to shoot more really.....

I think life is busy and we just do what we do. I dont put a lot into internet time on the POTN. We just contribute or post leisurely on a public forum. Kim posts often enough and will put some technical details from time to time.

Lucas you haven't posted much lately.....I posted stuff to get some conversation going. I'm just scared this Fuji forum will get boring you hiding and all :)

I don't get what makes you think most in here don't use flash... I use flash fairly often, I think many here do. Most of what I shoot is on the run, the Godox TT350's have been Godsends for that type of thing, though I often find myself just using the tiny XF-8 since I can fit it in any pocket.

Alan, I don't know that I've ever seen you post any of your professional work. I've seen some of it on your website, but I can't recall a time that you've ever posted it here... what makes you assume that this isn't the case with other members? It just seems to me that you jump to some conclusions really quickly without much reasoning behind it.

I've been busy indeed. I have probably 3 or 4 full or partially full memory cards to edit right now, as well as a backlog on my Capture One library... it's just not a priority unless I'm getting paid for it, the photos aren't going anywhere.

There will be lots of flashing where I’m shooting tonight. In a circus with burlesque shows and musicians. Hi-oooo

Tonight’s bag packing light with just the 16-55, 50-140, 16/1.4 and 35/1.4 TT685 and AD200 if I need them along with a little handheld led

And TTL is not exactly going to make you a better photographer, because it decides exposure for you. Plus affordable speedlites have been around at least for the past decade.

I've noticed a LOT of Sony shooters on instagram may show a behind the scenes pic on what gear they used to obtain a shot, but I think never have I actually seen a post where it said "strobe was on 1/4 power, manual, etc.". I think most if not all of them use TTL.

I learned off-camera lighting from my Canon flash, and cheap flashes like Yongnuo over a decade ago, sticking to my sync speed, no HSS, no TTL. In this day and age of TTL and set it and forget it camera settings, I still use manual settings. I don't want the camera to decide to bump up or down the flash power.

As for Alan's comment about hardly anyone in this thread using off-camera lighting, I think most, if not all, of my posted pics are with off-camera lighting, and I almost always (if not always) include lighting settings.

I may not post to this thread on a regular basis, but I still read all new posts. I enjoy seeing the photography of others. I like knowing information on how they got the shot, what made them get the shot, Why they wanted to get a shot like that, etc. What I haven't seen are any useful examples, or photos from Alan that contribute to this thread in any beneficial way.

at one point I was all about the strobes..

then I took a step back and wanted to learn about natural lighting..

then I decided natural lighting was too unpredictable

so I went back to off camera lighting..

loving my aputure led's

. however now that its warm weather again.. I got some outdoor shoots lined up , and a godox 600 on the way to deal with ambient.. because my 360's aren't quiete strong enough

so I got some Fujifilm.. expired in 2001..

what are the odds it gives me something interesting at the very least?

it has not been properly stored.. its been kicking around in my possession for the past 7 years.(someon gave it to me). I totally forgot about it until just a few days ago I was doing some closet re organizing and bumped into it.

(the cinestill is also expired by a year, and I shot it at a family gathering..outdoors.. we'll see soon enough how that turns out)

according to this source, they suggest not to set your camera based on the film's ISO.

so this being 100 speed film is going to make that 1 stop for every decade rule a challenge..

but I will just do mybest that the needle is quite a bit above Proper exposure for 100 speed film as I cant set it below that on my camera
