Having been to Rome 3 times before I thought this time I needed to stretch beyond the standard architecture and tourist photos of previous trips and try and capture more of the feel of the place. I was particularly looking for monochrome like images with just a splash of colour.

This was taken 20 metres from our hotel door in Trastavere

This was in an alcove along the banks of the Tiber near Trastevere

I saw this little slice of street life in an alleyway near Trevi Fountain

And this one, although a little macabre really grabbed me. There's something in there about the transience of life and how a brutal ending can still leave something almost perfect in it's form.

Finally this one had me reflecting on perfection lost in a rough and tumble, irregular world and the fragility of existence.

Any comments gratefully received but please be gentle. I am new to digital photography after a 20 year hiatus and only 3 weeks with the 5D MkIII.

Cheers

Really like the first one, though not a comment on the photo I love the name of the fourth one - 'Fallen Angel' - Brilliant! I think the last one would look better if the tomato was in the top right (crop from the top right corner diagonally) and perhaps making everything else black and white.

I think different angles could have made a few of the pictures a bit better

I just watched this video earlier, you might enjoy it if you haven't watched it already

1. Too busy for my taste - also better to have more space in front than behind. The area to the rear of the van doesn't help this shot.
2. Potential here but a shame you didn't explore different points of view/angles. Straight on against the wall, portrait or a lower angle may have been more interesting. Again, the area behind the scooter does not contribute to the shot.
3. The lunch n shoes against the textured stone and street has potential but framed as it is - not working for me.
4. A lower shot and angled would have added more interest plus more contrast, more drama - it needs to pop more.
5. Would have liked to see the rule of thirds applied ( tomato)

Some of these might benefit from more contrast as said or full Black and White conversion.
NOTE: The link provided above is quite good - might want to watch it. :) I believe chauncey deserves some credit for sharing this.

I really appreciate all the feedback and already have some notes on future change of approach.

Here are a few more from the same Italy trip in June 2012. I have tried to be a little more creative in choice of angles and some minimal PP and would really appreciate some further feedback particularly about composition and PP choice.

No one interested in providing feedback on my second attempt at creativity posting non-tourist shots?

Just jokes but am really trying to learn more and would appreciate other's guidance.

John,... most of us don't have the time to provide a thoughtful critique of so many shots. I would suggest picking one of your shots that in your own critique is truly outstanding, and post it in a thread of it's own.

Thanks Jon. Being new to the forum and not knowing the best approach, that is very worthwhile advice. Thanks and I will take it on board. Perhaps the thing to do is to show the original photo and the PP treatment and get feedback on what i consider to be the improved image. How does that sound?

Cheers

I can't put my finger on it, but they are all seriously lacking something in my opinion. they might need some better post work? A bit more time thinking about composition too, they are all rather "snapshotty". there is amazing stuff in rome but I'm not sure these photos did it justice. I agree with a black and white conversion, and I'm sorry if I come off as harsh.
