Took quite the long break from photography and now I'm trying to get back in it in full force. While I wait for my gear to arrive I was working on revitalizing my brand name and impulsively bought the domain name:

www.maximumaperture.net (external link)

It was formerly:

www.maxedoutphotography.com (external link)

I have a very long last name, but a very short first;), so I'm trying to stay away from the [Insert your name here].com

Does Maximum Aperture Photography sound too cheesy or what? At least much of the gear I'm getting will allow me to live up to the name:lol:

Most of the clever domain names that include my first name are taken:confused:

I think I like it. Sounds action-y. I suppose it matters whether you are shooting fast cars and sports or weddings and portraits...?

It doesn't matter how big your camera is, it's how you use it!

I agree with the above.

I think it is benificial to have the business name relate to the business you are in.

I have a company name and then several business names that are registered as a division of the umbrella company. This allows me to have an easy to remember and relative name to the markets I cover.

At the end of the day though, a business name won't loose you business, it's just nice to have one that may be remembered and get you some business. :D

From RDKirk: First, let me check the forum heading...yes, it does say "Business of Photography" and not "Hobby of Photography." Okay. So we're talking about making money, not about hobbies. By "business" I am presuming activities that pay expenses and produce a profit over the long term.

I agree with the above comments.
Anything with the word 'Max' is going to sound like everything is 'Too the max', so sounds very energetic.

But then because your name is Max, whatever name you choose with your name in is going to sound energetic.

Put it this way, if i seen MaximumAperture.net advertised then i would instantly know its photography, but i would think it's photography for sport and energetic hobbies.

Just my 2 pence.

I actually don't like "Maximum Aperture". Most clients don't know what aperture is. Wouldn't mean anything to me if I was looking for a photographer and "Maximum Aperture" popped up.

Very true. Nobody but people involved fairly heavily into conventional photography know what "maximum aperture" refers to.

This was my immediate thought as well.

You might need to go with MaxMegaPixels to attract the typical "non-photography enthusiast". j/k

Agreed. The word "maximum" gives me a sense of performance related concept. Wouldn't use it for wedding photography.

At the end of the day though, the name itself won't matter as much as the brand you build with that name... well, just as long as the name isn't like "piece of crap photography" or something. :D

The domain name is fine with me, not as good as your avatar image.

My question is, will you only shoot at your max aperture?

Thanks for the responses everyone, I just needed some 2nd opinions on the whole concept.
Portraits > Street(People\Landscapes) > Weddings(2nd shooter) seems to be what I gravitate to when I think about what I used to shoot most; also looking at my very modest portfolio.

I see some good opportunities to cover sports at my Uni and in the next 6 months I'm saving up for the 200L IS (for portraits), so who knows where the wind will blow me. I remember covering football games in HS with my old 70-200 and it was incredibly fun. Maybe next year.

You guys are right. To cover my bases I've purchased www.minimumaperture.net (external link), a subsidiary specializing in diffraction photography. It's sort of a niche thing these days:lol:

Honestly my best idea was to do something like: "maxoutput" or "maximumoutput" and design a multimedia site but only .org .co and .biz are available. You think I would encounter similar problems as aperture?
Might actually help my academic cause to have a web based portfolio for the grad programs I'm interested in:
