Hi everybody, this is my first post so please be nice!
I have searched the net and this forum but none really answer my question, so here it goes:
My kit-
I have a Canon 650D (so crop sensor 1.6x). I also at this time have 3 lenses, Canon 70-200 f/4L, Canon 17-85 f/4-5.6 USM IS and Canon 40 f/2.8 STM Pancake lens. I also have a Jessops 360AFD flashgun.

A friend of mine owns a small nightclub/bar (the reason i say nightclub/bar is because it only has a small downstairs bar area, and an upstairs small dance floor with another bar). He has asked me to do photos for him this weekend coming and i'm not sure which lens would be more appropriate! I'm thinking the Canon 40 f/2.8 STM would be better as its a fairly quick prime that i wouldn't need to worry about zooming with, but on the note i think the Canon 17-85 f/4-5.6 USM IS would be more useful as 1) It has IS, and 2) It is wider angle.
What do you guys/gals think? Whichever lens between the Canon 17-85 f/4-5.6 USM IS and the Canon 40 f/2.8 STM i decide not to use, i will be selling.

P.S Obviously my 70-200 f/4L is out of the question.

Canon 'Nifty Fity' 50mm f1.8 II
Canon 10-18mm f4-5.6 IS STM

If you are going to use a flash, you can get away with quite a few lenses - including all of the ones you have.

Which ones will work the best depend on how close you will be be to the stage, whether you are looking for closeups, group shots or both.

Ask first whether the flash will be a distraction to the performers or to the patrons.

I usually shoot these venues without flash but YMMV.

Without a flash, the same rules apply regarding where you are standing and what type of shots you want.

That being said, without a flash (and I use full frame) I rely on the 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 IS II.

Since you are using a crop (multiply the view by 1.6), unless you are pretty far back or want real, real closeups, I would think you would not be using the 70-200 f/4 all that much.

Shoot in RAW and JPG. Set your white balance carefully if you want decent JPG shots.

Best advice - use a monopod.

Thanks for the feedback, there is only going to be a DJ their, no acts or stage really, its a pretty small club.
I was also going to ask that, which shall i shoot in, RAW or JPG. I will be editing the photos as far as putting a watermark on them, adjust sharpness and noise, and thats about it. As i'm a novice when it comes to editing.

Agreed. If you know what to do in post you can recover more shadow detail and tweak more in post
