I've been using Pocketwizard TT1s & TT5s for a bit. Usually it's very close range to each unit, mainly at arms length. I use an AC3 controller to adjust my output. The flashes are 580exII models, the camera is a 5D mrkII.

At "arms" length I get relatively consistent output, with an occasional misfire. I've preprogrammed them to do rear-curtain at 1/100th, and down, and HSS at 1/25th, and up. ETTL metering seems to work well, whether in manual, or aperture priority.

Once I start adding distance I find I'm getting more inconsistent results. Manual exposure settings often cause flash output to go wonky. Aperture priority seems to do OK. My range only seems to be 46' due to the RF interference from the 580exII, and I do use the AC5 softshield. The AC3 controller also seems to really not work the way I expect it to, often causing blowout shots.

I just did an experiment the other day, which I blogged about. You can see it here. (external link)

Since then, I've updated the firmware (from 6.0 to 6.2), as well as reprogramming all the units to be the exact same. I'm posting here to see if any experienced users have any tips, or experienced knowledge on how to improve my use of these tools. I already know there are other types of controllers out there, so don't need any pointers to other brands.

Basically I just want to get better at using what I already have.
