Hi guys, I'm new to the forum - I've had my 20D since last May and have enjoyed the camera, but now I'm thinking of upgrading to the 5D... Anyone else made the change or is thinking of doing so?

I have a 20D and I do not plan on changing camera
They are two camera's that are designed for different purposes, I don't see the 5D as a 20D upgrade...

I think the best thing to do is ask yourelf how you would benefit from the 5D, what type of photography do you do?

If in doubt, I shut up...

Gear: 40D, 12-24mm AT-X Pro, 17-85mm, Sigma 150mm Macro Sigma 100-300 F4, 550EX, other stuff that probably helps me on my way.

AGREE its not an upgrade unless you want larger files .

Bigger file size would be good for me as I use the camera for work purposes as well and could do with it - so for me it really would be an upgrade...

Sounds good not having to contend with the 1.6 factor ...

I bought the 5D but not as an upgrade but for what it is a FF camera. I wanted it as I do a lot of landscapes. Its an excellent camera give great results with little noise, and operates just as your 20D. I kept hold of my 20D as it goes great with the 100-400 for wildlife.

I made the change for many reasons including UPGRADE....it is an upgrade and I will probably catch crap for saying so...but the 5D is a great camera that does everything the 20D does and soooo much more......I sold both my 20d's and don't miss them at all....
but be advised that I also have all "L" glass.....great move and you'll love the 5D.....don

Cheers, Don

Just waiting to see if I can get someone to take my 20D first and then buy the 5D and another L Lens to go with my 70-200 L lens...:)

Can I throw the first cowpat?
Each has its place. Only consider 'changing' if you already have a lot of good glass and are sure you won't miss the extra 'reach' (you know what I mean) the 20D gives.
I have both bodies. The 5D is amazing for portraits & landscapes, but I'll continue to reach for my 20D for nature and sports.

Remember:- if you can't use your feet or change your lens to capture that distant bird or footballer, then the 5D will give you 2 or 3 million LESS useable pixels than the 20D.

Agreed. If I UPGRADE, it will be to the 1D MkII. I need the speed and focal length conversion factor for sports shooting. The weather sealing is a nifty feature, too. :)

Friendly proposal:

If you've waited so far [from May 2005] be a little patient, and wait a little more [Until PMA in late Feb.], and by then you & us will know far more to make a smart decision...

Since the focal length factor is only 1.3 on the 1D mkII and it's only 8mp you actually have more of a focal length advantage cropping down to 8mp with the 12mp 5D.

I agree with the pro body is an advangate though.

If you consider the 30 - 60 - 10- 20 evolutionary tree, you'dve had to skip a generation to really justify upgrading.
Unless the 20D replacement is truly amazing, there will just be the previous incremental changes which will seriously tempt current 10, 300, and 350 owners, but only those 'fashion victims' amongst 20D owners.

Perhaps. But the 1D Mk II is 8.5 fps, and that is my primary interest for sports shooting. The weather sealing would be nice for rainy nights when I'm standing on the sidelines at the football field.
