70-200 f2.8 v2 worth the upgrade over v1?

Just did some googling and I found several unofficial lens reviews comparing v1 to v2 of the 70-200 f2.8 and they were all saying that the v2 is noticeably sharper than v1. Is that considered true around here? I will be upgrading my f4 non-IS soon and I'm trying to make the decision between v1 and v2, trying to decide if the upgrade will be worth it for me or not.

Absolutely true that the new version is sharper, but if it's worth it or not is up to you based on your standards, budget, and needs. There's still plenty of folks happily using the v1 out there.

Definitely sharper.. it's a pretty big upgrade, IMO.

I have the budget for v2 just trying to decide if it makes sense to spend it or not. Sounds like it does. I currently have the f4 non-IS version and it's my favorite lens. Pretty psyched about the upgrade.

I had the f/2.8 non-IS and it was worth every penny. I use if for almost everything.

If you can afford it, its worth the $$$. Its also quite heavy for some folks and if weight is a concern the F4L IS is a better buy. However if one needs F2.8 then this baby is all its claimed to be. I'd go as far as saying that this is Canon's best lens.

Upgraded from v1 to v2 last November and it's definitely sharper, shorter MFD comes in handy sometimes, better IS and worth every penny.

It is sharper than the 100mm L macro at 100mm....

which is already an awfully high hurdle to leap...

It is just stupidly, wildly sharp.

Yes, worth the upgrade.

I've loved my 70-200 f/2.8 IS II for a couple of years and have decided to sell it ONLY because it is heavy and I'm a wimp.

I don't have the MKII (I'd like to), so I can only go by something like the-digital-picture.com (external link) posts. It's close, but the with the two they are comparing, the 100L has the MKII beat in overall sharpness.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

from the V1 to V2 i would say its not worth it because its a big jump in price, but from the F4 I would do it.

I currently have the f4 non-IS version and it's my favorite lens.

Just did the same thing - went from the f/4 non-IS to the f/2.8 IS II. Couldn't resist the current $500 discount. I never really used my f/4, but for $2000 I better use the f/2.8 all the time!

Where can I find out more about that discount?
