any reason to get the 6D over the D600?

sorry guys, a little more active in the forums nowadays as i've been trying out different cameras and just sold my 5d2 away for fresh $$$.

i've been reading a lot of reviews (both user and site) on the 6D vs D600, and it appears that there are very few advantages to getting the 6D. don't get me wrong - i really want to prove myself wrong because i still have a ton of L glass to clear if i were to jump camp.. but it seems difficult for me to justify the 6D purchase now.

pure specs aside, i'd choose d600 because

even with extra sensitive central pt, d600 can trash it with a simple built-in AF beam [I used to carry a 580 just to AF assist my 5d2 back then]

d600's AF is faster ( but there are mixed reviews on whether it's more reliable or not) than 6D.

wifi+gps is a plus, but i don't really need it.. cos i have a gps logger and a wireless IR remote to trigger shots.

d600 can stand 150k, but 6D can only do 100k (for resale value, not because i can hit 100k that easily.. lol)

... and a host of specs (not as impt) that can beat the 6D hands down.


the only reason i'd choose 6D is because

- it's a pain to migrate from one system to the other
- their high ISO is superb. (prolly' around 1stop better?)
- it does better video ( but 85% of my work is on stills, 15% on video and it's for leisure )
- ergonomics (probably because i'm used to it, and i'll miss the big scroll wheel on the back..)


initially i was addicted to the 5d3, because its AF was just too good - there was no hesitation when i pointed to whatever i want to shoot. the 5d3 was also probably the trigger that led me to explore alternatives (too expensive, and i wanted a lightweight option for travel).

any saving grace for the 6d, please?

The built-in AF beam is fine until you try to grab a shot of wildlife in low light and they spook when the beam fires up.

My best friend and I are in opposite camps. He just bought a D600 and I just bought a 6D. We haven't had a chance to really compare them head to head yet.

What L lenses would you be thinking of selling?

I have never used either but I have been reading about the 6D recently and stumbled across this:

no offence to KRW, but his reviews are usually quite superficial or doesn't go into real-world usage scenarios. for instance, his 6d vs 5d3 comparison - the AF is night and day between both cameras, but he simply compares the number of AF points (rather than its effectiveness).

hmm i rarely shoot animals - it's people most of the time.. lol.

Nikon's lens lineup is slightly more expensive, but then Canon's new releases haven't been affordable either.

The ergonomics on the Nikon are different, so make sure you hold one before making a decision. Another plus for the D600 is the built in flash, which you can use as a wireless commander for remote flashes.

yes, i'm pretty clear about the advantages of the d600 and i'm quite inclined towards the dark side now too. that's why i'm posting on the canon forum, to see if u guys can pull me back.. hahaha.

The whole idea of moving to a totally different system after getting to know all the little nuances of the Canon stuff would be enough for me. I mean sure, it's a great camera and all, but is the Nikon really going to make that much of a difference in what you shoot? That's really only something you can decide.

yup, that's basically the idea of sunk cost.. and with the help of everyone, i'd be able to better see whether it's worth the switch or not.

AF beams are no good at events like weddings, concerts etc. so the 6D is a clear winner there.
I think you need to get hands on with both cameras before you make a decision.

If your subject is a bit further away, then the built-in AF assist beam of the D600 isn't gonna help you, while the super sensitive center AF point of the 6D is...

If the size/weigh is not main factor in decision, in your case, I'd go with 5D III or D600, considering you sold 5D II for some reasons (AF, etc... ?) that 6D probably will not improve much.

D600 is very useful because if you run out of lube you can just use the ones from it. That thing leaks more than the Exxon Valdez.

If i were you, i'd step up to the 5D3. The extra cost should cancel out against the cost of having to sell and replace your current glass. The 5D3 prices have dropped a lot.

So, you won't get the -3EV that the 6D offers.. either does the D600.

About the only loss incurred would be, not getting the better DR of the D600, and heavier than the 6D.

You won't have to "relearn" everything, and try and come to terms with the Nikon ergonomics.

Not really one of your "options", but definitely something to consider.

My friend shoots Nikon and whenever I borrow his camera to shoot with for fun, the AF assist lamp is usually more annoying than anything else. I shoot a lot of candid stuff at events and parties. It always causes people to stop what they are doing and either look at me or they see some light spot on someone or the wall and are like "what is that?" So, I'd always have to disable it.

I guess it depends what you shoot.
