Neither of them are particularly good cameras, it seems hardly worth jumping off the Canon bandwagon for a second rate version of a Nikon.

There is really no deal breaker differences between the two cameras (I mean if). The cost difference should be main criteria to decide. In India, 6D body is 10% cheaper. The big difference is with kit lens. 6D is with L lens while D600 comes with consumer grade zoom at similar price point. There is substantial difference between two lenses. Therefore choice should fall on 6D.

edit: Since I started afresh after selling my two lenses, the kit lens offered with D600 was a deal breaker

There are a few lenses Canon makes which have no equal in the Nikon world, like the 135L. If your favorite lenses aren't available as Nikons, you may want to reconsider jumping ship.

If your used to canon and like the lens lineup get the 6d.

Honestly the d600 isnt going to be any different in real world use.

is outer AF point tracking a dealbreaker for anyone here? some might argue the points are so clustered together that you might as well use the central point to track instead..

Both have tightly clustered af points, I dotn think either 'win' on autofocus.

Yes the 6d only has 1 cross type, but its better than the d600's and the other points seem to work fine.

The question is not whether the D600 is better or worse than the 6D.

The question is how will your photography benefit if you switch?

My recommendation is to get the 5D mkIII.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

I made the switch to Nikon as neither the 6D or 5Dmk3 were any improvement over my 5Dmk2.

If Canon comes with a better model next time my camera is due to be replaced, I may go back.

I dont really care about the brands, I can get the lenses I need from both so the switch is no problem at all.

Bottom line - I wouldnt get the 6D over the D600 unless I would miss something (specialty lens) on the Nikon's side..

I happen to agree with snowyman.

Going 6D or D600 from a 5D2 is more like a side-grade.

An upgrade should be either D800 or 5D3...

I dont know about this. D800 doesnt offer anything over D600 (relevant to me anyway). The same with 5Dmk3 over 5Dmk2. It is just matter of requirements..

The only pro from 5D2 -> D600 is a slight DR increase and maybe slightly better AF. Build quality is probably worse than 5D2. To me that's really not worth the switch.

D800 has the MP, better DR, much better AF and build compared to D600. Now that's what I'd call a real upgrade ;)

Don't get so caught up like this about gear. Both are great cameras and fairly equivalent in their own respect. I'm pretty sure whatever you get your outcomes will be the same.

That is more like huge increase in DR (over 2 stop). Dont really care about the AF as I usually use manual anyway. Build quality will be better, well it is weather sealed at least anyway.

The D800 has got the same DR as D600 (from what I've seen in test - never compared personally), the AF doesnt concern me and the file size is not worthy another $1000 for me.

There you go, I got myself upgrade:) but to each their own..

Only if you are a dedicated land/seascaper (maybe you are :)). The 2 stops DR advantage is only @ ISO100, @ ISO400 and up there is no real advantage anymore.

Also 5D2 is weather sealed too ;)
