I received an EOS M for Christmas, for which I'd like to play around with video. On all video size settings the videos are jerky but the sound is normal. This problem occurs in Windows Media Player and Quicktime Player. My videos have been copied to my commuter's desktop. Connected to a wide screen TV via the HDMI lead the videos are good.

I've tried converting the videos to AVI at full size and the videos play only slightly better but still not good enough.

The codec Canon uses for video is not optimized to play natively on a computer. Converting it to a more lightly compressed format like AVI doesnt work well either. I am on a Mac and this is the case with QT. Cant speak for WMP but I'm guessing that's the issue. I've been dealing with codec intricacies for many years and no matter how bad-a$$ your computer is, it just won't happen.
If you can, convert it to a computer friendly codec like h264 or mpeg4. Or upload to Vimeo or YouTube which will perform their own conversions optimized for web. Should play fine from the web.

I have problems with VLC and Canon DSLR (T2i) videos straight out of camera. The native windows 8 video player app plays them flawlessly. I usually convert them to mp4 in handbrake for local playback.

Thanks for your tips :)

I converted a couple of vids to mp4 and they run much smoother.
