Hello all.

Pleased to say I finally got approval to get one of these this morning and I wasted no time in getting to the shops!

Love the size, weight and feel.

Surprised by general sharpness though so I hope a few of you here might be able to help. After not being wowed, I did a few comparrisons with my 24-105.

I've tried about 10 side by side shots now and at f4 on both lenses, I'd say the 24-105 has a very slight edge in sharpness on every comparison. From the reviews I was expecting the 35 to be superb at f4 and very good at f2. I'm not seeing it. All comparisons just checked in the centre of the frame at the moment.

Do I have a bad copy or does this sound about right?

Hi. No, but I've taken a few frames with stuff in front and behind the focus point to double check if it was front or back focusing. Focusing seems fine. Just generally not as sharp as I was expecting.

Just taken another bunch to check 24-105 against 35, this time on manual with flash. Still the same results!?

Monkey Moss may have a defective copy, but sometimes I swear people never take the time to properly figure out how to get the most out of their gear. When you look at images from a certain lens, you'll see such a large variance in quality and that's because some people just shoot jpeg and don't know how to process and others shoot RAW and know how to get the most of their gear in camera and in post.

Sorry if you feel this is purely directed at you Monkey Moss but it isn't. I just see so many people complaining about various lenses when it isn't so much the issue of the lens, it's the skill of the photographer.

How did you shoot? Handheld with IS on or tripod IS off? Can't believe it is not sharper than the 24-105L. My old 35 f2 is sharper than my then 24-105.

Mine as well. My 3 copies of the 24-105 (owned over the years) have never had the wow factor my 35mm f/2 IS has (nor a few other non L lenses I've owened).
It definitely sounds defective.

Having looked at Monky moss's Flickr page I'm in no doubt he knows how to use a camera, some fantastic shots there.

Thanks very much for all your responses, much appreciated. And thanks for the compliment Dave, very kind.

I will try and get back to the shop this week and ask to try another copy. Fingers crossed. I will keep you all posted.
